Now that Apple has finally released the white iPhone 4 here’s the question: is it really thicker than the original black iPhone 4? According to Apple’s SVP of Product Marketing Phil Schiller and Consumer Reports, they’re all the same, measuring exactly 0.37 inches. The photo above from Consumer Reports show the measurements of the two iPhone 4 versions, while Schiller told 9to5Mac that the white iPhone 4 is “not thicker, don’t believe all the junk that you read.” Well, sure. But what about some of the reports that came out early, showing a clear (but still relatively small) difference in thickness? Does that mean that some white iPhone 4s (or at least some of the first ones made available on launch day) are thicker than others? Truth be told, we don’t think the slight difference is a big deal since our white iPhone 4 fits inside the bumper case we slipped over it, but if you’re shopping for a new case, it’s still probably wise to bring it and check if it fits. Just in case you picked up a freak fat white iPhone.
Well, the white iPhone 4 is finally out, which should satisfy everyone who’s been aiming to get their hands on the rare color for months now. If all the hoopla made you a little curious, it’s really not that big a deal. The white iPhone 4 basically comes with the same price and same specs, but in a different color, right? Apparently not. It looks like the unique coating they added to the white panels to fix the light leaks added a little bit of meat (around 0.2mm, according to TiPb) to the original’s dimensions.
After months and months of waiting, Apple will finally be rolling out the much-delayed white iPhone 4. Deserves a short “yay,” we guess. Forgive the slight lack of enthusiasm, but we do know a lot of people who just gave up on waiting and picked up the regular black iPhone 4 a long time ago. Not that it makes a difference to Apple, mind you. It’s not like they really care which color you bought, but in case you’re still holding out for the white version, it’s out on AT&T (GSM) and Verizon (CDMA) on April 28th.
We all expected the white iPhone 4 to be out soon, but if this tip is a solid sign of its imminent release, it’s very close to launching. And when we say “close,” we’re talking “two-days-to-launch” close. According to this Best Buy inventory screen that was ninja-snapped and sent to 9to5Mac, Best Buy could be stocking their shelves with the white iPhone 4 by April 27th.
Apple has already confirmed that the white iPhone 4 is still on track for a spring release, but in case you were still skeptical, here’s another sign that it’s close to being launched: an inventory listing of new iPhone SKUs (for both 16GB and 32GB versions) popped up on this leaked Verizon inventory screen. While it doesn’t outright say “white iPhone 4,” it does show the same numbering system used on the iPad where the white model is always a number after the black version: the black iPhone 4 is MC678, so the MC679 can only mean the 32GB white iPhone 4.
