Western Digital has announced that they’ve updated their made-for-Mac line of My Passport external drives: the My Passport Studio, and the My Passport for Mac. The most obvious difference for the updates involves the drives’ physical design, with WD wrapped these new drives in an all-metal enclosure instead of the usual shiny plastic. The result? They’re more durable than their predecessors. As a bonus, the new drives look pretty good, with design cues that match Apple’s aluminum-clad Macs.
Here’s something everyone might have a need for: Western Digital just introduced the WD Nomad, a rugged case designed to protect your vanilla WD My Passport drives from 7-foot drops and the elements. It’s basically a shell builtwith a “tough polycarbonate exterior” and a”soft elastomer cushion lining” for keeping your data safe when the going gets tough, and is built to MIL-STD 810G military standards for keeping it safe from dirt, dust and moisture.
Western Digital just updated their My Book Studio line for Macs with the Studio Edition II, featuring a compact body that holds in a pair of drives that tops off at a whopping 6 Terabytes. Awesome for the target market, which is basically made up of Mac-using multimedia editors and creative types who need enough space to store uncompressed media files in for editing.
Western Digital has just updated their line of media players with the WD TV Live Hub that pretty much ties a lot of different devices into this one box. Like every other WD TV device, it’s a full HD media center for playing movies, music and photos, and it’s a network drive with 1TB of storage space for serving up media to either an HDTV.
Western Digital just updated a number of their external drives with larger storage capacities and faster connections. Their smallest portable drive, the My Passport Essential, gets a faster USB 3.0 connection and a capacity of 500GB, while the My Passport Essential SE gets the faster interface and bigger storage caps of 750GB and 1TB. The external storage headliner is the My Book Essential external desktop drive, which just got updated with a USB 3.0 connection and boasts of “the highest industry capacity” with a new model that tops out at 3TB.
