The idea of Sony merging the PSP with a smartphone has been around for about a month now, but this photo proves it’s real. It’s clearly marked as a Sony Ericsson unit with Android phone buttons below the screen, with a slide-out panel that holds the standard PSP game controls as well as a touchpad in the middle. The Android version it’ll run on isn’t clear, although it’s expected to run on Android 3.0 (which may or may not be Gingerbread), as well as a custom interface that comes with a link to the Sony Marketplace for downloading games.
Because Sony has never confirmed (nor denied) their plans of coming out with a successor to the aging PSP handheld, rumors of a PSP2 are beginning to take on a sort of Big Foot or Nessie feel to it. There’s been a lot of rumors, but not much proof that it exists. Until now, after an exec from the developer of the upcoming Mortal Kombat game slipped out that they already have a PSP2 in house.
Sony just released a new Marcus PSP ad that makes fun of iPhone games, with Marcus saying that the iPhone isn’t capable of playing “big boy games,” and that it’s for texting your grandma or calling your girl. The new ad emphasizes that Sony is offering some of their most popular made-for-PSP games for only $10.
