With the popularity of the Skype app on mobile phones, the absence of an official Skype app for the iPad has to go up on the “we-have-no-idea-why-there-isn’t-an-official-iPad-app-for-this-yet” list, along with Facebook. But because Skype is also up on the “you-absolutely-need-to-have-this-app-on-your-mobile-device” list (also along with Facebook), we’ve had to make do with the tiny iPhone version of the app stretched on our iPad 2’s screen for weeks now. Looks like we’re due for a solution any day now: Skype has revealed that the official iPad version of the app is ready for a release.
The Skype app for Android has been out for only a few days, but it’s already been hacked to allow users to make VoIP calls over 3G networks. Not a big deal in other countries where Skype’s app is allowed to do that, but the US version comes with a restriction that limits the app to making calls over Wi-fi. Until now. Download link for the app after the break.
Skype has just unleashed a major update for their iPhone app that will let you make Skype-to-Skype calls through a mobile 3G connection. That’s pretty much it for the Skype 2.0 app, but that’s pretty major, right? Calling via a 3G connection means you’re not limited to a Wi-fi hotspot anymore for making VoIP calls or sending SMS across the ocean for less.

Skype and Nokia has just officially announced that the Skype app for Nokia smartphones can now be downloaded (for FREE) from the Ovi Store. What does that mean? Well, if you own an iPhone or BlackBerry, this doesn’t mean much. But if you own a Nokia smartphone (full list of supported Nokia devices after the cut), that means that you can now download something for your smartphone that’s way more useful than a mobile Facebook app.
Skype went with the times by upgrading their video-chat capabilities to support 720p HD video chats. The higher resolution is made possible by Skype’s 4.2 beta app, which can support the high-res video streams, although the guy on the other end is going to need a 720p-quality webcam and a 1Mbps internet connection for that to happen. The HD capabilities are currently limited to Windows-based systems, although Mac support should be added with an update soon.
