The MacBook-styled Nokia N9 will be the first mainstream smartphone to come packing Intel’s 1.2GHz Atom processor, if the report from Finnish tech mag Prossessori proves to be true. They didn’t mention how they knew (the report didn’t mention a source), but they also mentioned that the N9 will be the first phone to run on the MeeGo OS, which makes the N9 a big thing for Nokia’s smartphone plans to fight alongside Apple and the Android Army.
Nokia has announced that they’ve started shipping the N8—the company’s Symbian^3-powered flagship—to compete in a world market that’s quickly filling up with iPhones and Android devices. It’s currently shipping to the people who signed up for early pre-orders though, so it’s not quite there for everyone just about yet, but Nokia expects the N8 to be widely available in the coming weeks, depending on the carrier and country.
Leaked images of Nokia’s upcoming N9 smartphone has surfaced (via this Chinese site), showing a metal unibody frame (is that aluminum?), black keys, and a glossy black bezel framing the screen. Does it look familiar to you?
Aaaaand it’s finally available in the US. Well, almost. After being criticized in a leak, confirmed, and then officially previewed way back in late April through May, the Nokia N8 is now available for pre-orders in the US. It’s certainly way past the point of “it’s about time.” After seeing a couple of Droids, a new touch-based Blackberry and the iPhone 4 (antennagate issues and all) launch in the US market since then, you can say it’s been a really long waiting period.
