If you just splurged a serious amount of cash this season for a new home entertainment center that centers on a 3D TV – and a few pairs of generic 3D TV glasses to watch it with – then you’re going to want to look into this. LG has announced that they’ll be coming out with a new collection of 3D glasses. They’ll probably work just like the ones you already have (more or less), but the new line promises to be lighter and more comfortable to wear and look less goofy, with clean frames and curved lenses, designs that you can probably get away with outside on a sunny day, and a pair designed by designer Alain Mikli. LG’s official press release after the break.
Finally, someone thought of a way to make things a little more easy for consumers. See, with all the different 3D products spread out among different 3D-making brands who use different 3D tech, it’s getting pretty hard to decide these days. Products that feature 3D video tech don’t come cheap after all. Anyway, here’s what’s on tap for the near future: Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and 3D solutions company XPAND 3D said that they’ll be working on a 3D active glasses standard called the Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative.
Are you a huge Transformers geek? There’s here’s the good news: first, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is due out this summer. Second, it’s going to be shown in 3D. Third, Hasbro will be releasing $10 Transformer-themed Cine-Mask 3D glasses in Optimus Prime and Bumblebee versions to add a little cosplay flavor to the movie-viewing experience. The masks come with a standard pair of Real3D glasses, so they’re good for most 3D movies whether they feature alien robots that transform into, well, other things, or something else that’s so awesome that you just have to see it in 3D.
Samsung started the ball rolling on the 3D innovation front when they came out with 3D prescription glasses. Then, Oakley unveiled a stylized pair of Tron-themed 3D glasses. All good and well, but what if a) you don’t need prescription glasses, b) you’re not particularly fond of Tron, and c) you want a pair that actually looked good and less geeky? LG’s working on it. They just put out word that they’re working on a pair designed with French eyewear designer Alain Mikli to provide a line of “unbeatably comfortable and stylish glasses” that’s built with metals and not the usual cheap plastic materials. Interested? Look for them to get unveiled during CES 2011 in January, expect them to look nice, fit comfortably, and—unfortunately—not be cheap.
Oakley just announced that they’ll be celebrating the release of TRON: Legacy by releasing a TRON Limited Edition TRON 3D Gascan glasses. What’s so special about it? They’re 3D glasses. Designed by Oakley, who makes glasses that generally look pretty cool. The result is a cool-looking pair of 3D glasses that’s etched with TRON-inspired graphics along the side. Oh, and they also built it with HDO-3D tech on the lens that technically makes this pair “optically correct 3D eyewear,” and Oakley’s molds, curves and materials that make it precisely aligned and comfy enough to wear for a couple of hours in a moviehouse. The TRON Limited Edition 3D Gascan will be available in November for $150. Take note that it’s made for indoor movies and is not ideal for normal daily use though, so unless you’re a hardcore TRON fan from back when TRON was huge or just an Oakley collector looking for rare pairs, you might want to think it through.
