But the genius is in the design: the accessory features two “clamps” on each side that locks both the 11- or 13-inch Macbook Air into place with a push of the lever, while the dock itself keeps the Mac’s rear-end raised for more effective cooling.

InfiniWing is raising support for the dock via Kickstarter, aiming for $50,000 by January 1. Once the target is reached, people who supported the project can buy it for $140, while everyone else can get it for $200 once the product gets officially launched.

The LandingZone is certainly cheap, but it does have a downside: it won’t support the ThunderBolt interface. But if you really don’t need it, the Mini DisplayPort is good for connecting displays with a 2560 x 1440 resolution and it’s certainly good enough for the price.

Now, we have no idea why anyone would drop a perfectly working laptop off a 20-foot balcony (or drop a bowling ball on an iPad), but if you ever wanted to see a really convincing product demo, then you’re going to want to see this. G-Form just put out a YouTube demo video that pimps out their Exreme Sleeve for laptops. The victim: A 13-inch MacBook Pro. The crime: they dropped the running laptop from a 20-foot balcony. Did it survive? Of course. Or else, it would have made for a really crappy demo video. But will it blend? We’re pretty sure it will, but just for the hell of it, we’d love to watch that, because a tech demo deathmatch sounds like fun. G-Form’s demo video and press release after the break.

Fact number two: despite being called “laptops,” you usually can’t keep a laptop on your lap for more than a few minutes because of the heat being spewed out from the underside. Solution? There are actually a lot of laptop platforms and cooling pads you can get to get around these issues, but Logitech’s first Speaker Lapdesk N700 was apparently successful enough that they thought to put out another one—this time for smaller notebooks and netbooks—called the N550.

It’s a pretty simple accessory, but well-thought of. The N550’s surface can fit laptops from 14-inches and below, features a pair of USB-powered 2W stereo speakers with bass reflex performance, a built-in riser that provides a ten-degree angle for comfort, and a soft air mesh fabric that makes it comfy around the legs. The platform itself shields you from the notebook’s heat, and comes with a handy volume control for setting the volume right on the pad.

Handy kit if you’re always on the go or you’re more comfortable using a laptop on a couch than on a table. It’s due out in January for $59.

Apple finishes off its update day with a couple of new accessories: the 27-inch LED Cinema Display and a new input peripheral called the Magic Trackpad. Despite the mystical name, it’s simply an oversized touchpad that connects via Bluetooth. It acts and feels the same as a MacBook’s pad, but it’s 80% larger, giving your Mac desktop multitouch support. As an accessory for a MacBook, well, you get a larger area to do all your swiping with.

Built with a with a tilted frame that matches Apple’s wireless keyboard’s angle, the trackpad supports every multitouch gesture you can do on a MacBook’s pad, including two-finger pinches and three-finger swipes. The rubber feet also comes with a clicker that registers a mouse-like “click” when the surface is tapped down. It’s a bit limited though: the Magic Trackpad should connect to any Mac with a Bluetooth connection, as long as the system is running OS X 10.6.4. It won’t run on a Windows PC either, but it’ll work on a Mac running Windows via Boot Camp.

The 27-inch LED Cinema Display features the same 2560 x 1440 resolution and wide 16:9 aspect ratio you’d get on the 27-inch Mac, but features LED backlighting and is built using in-plane switching (IPS) display tech so you get more colors and a wider viewing angle.

It’s basically an extra display with built-in speakers that connects via a single Mini DisplayPort connector. It’s got enough features to effectively replace or add to whatever Apple display you’re running , including an iSight camera and microphone up front and a USB hub to give you easy access. A MagSafe connector also helps keep things neat and Apple-like, offering a single cable for hooking up a MacBook with power, USB, and a DisplayPort connection.

The Magic TrackPad is selling for $69, while the 27-inch LED Cinema Display is due out in September for $999.

Okay, Samsung didn’t really come up with the first 1TB 2.5-inch drive for notebooks (Western Digital first reached 1TB limit with the Scorpio Blue almost exactly a year ago), but the Spinpoint MT2 is Samsung’s first 2.5-inch drive to hit the 1TB limit. Not that it’s information that consumers like you and me would care about, mind you – we don’t really care who came first now, do we? But we do care about which 1TB drive is better.

To that end, Samsung is claiming that the Spinpoint MT2 is 20% faster and uses 4% less power than WD’s Scorpio Blue, although in a non-standard shell (it’s a bit thicker than the usual 2.5-incher) that limits it to certain notebook models and devices with a SATA or SATA II interface.

The 1TB model packs three 333GB platters spinning at 5,400rpm, but the MT2 will also be available in a smaller 750GB model. They didn’t announce stand-alone pricing, but we should be seeing more and more notebooks rocking a 1TB drive before the year ends.

Looking to buy a colorful new VAIO? Check out Sony’s new VAIO E Color Combo site to find out just how colorful you can get with it. Specifically, the new site will let you pick out different color combinations, starting with the main notebook color, then the mouse, keyboard skin and sleeve. Basically, this lets you check out how your chosen colors look together before you hit the checkout button.

The new site offers a lot of customization, letting you pick from five colors for the notebook and keyboard skin, eight mouse colors, and four for the reversible sleeve. So yeah, it’s totally possible to go all eight-year-old on your new laptop and pick out different colors for the set. Just make sure you show it to other people (read: adults who are not colorblind or under the influence of hallucinogens) before buying anything.

The custom colors apply to the 14-inch VAIO EA Series and the 15.5-inch EB Series. The VAIO EA starts at $800, while the larger EB’s price starts at a cent under $1000.

But now that almost everyone in the coffeeshop has a cold aluminum-ized laptop, it doesn’t look so awesome anymore. Here’s something that’ll let your MacBook stand out from the crowd… or blend with the furniture.

These “100% authentic wood” skins come in two lines: the $35 Originals are made up of six different plain wood grains from bamboo to walnut. The Artists Series are priced at $50, but the wood skins are designed by artists. Two artist designs are currently available at the site: Flourish by Debbie Clapper, and Dot Man by Mr. Penfold.

Everything is currently up for preorders, with shipments starting on May 1st.

Computer peripheral maker Zemno has introduced the DeskBook Pro Docking Station, a portable notebook platform that features ModBay technology—the company’s proprietary tech that allows users to plug in modules that can either add more storage.

It’s described to work with both Windows and Mac-based laptops, although the design does seem perfectly matched for Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro. Whatever the platform, it adds a lot of functionality, with 7 USB ports, FireWire 400 and 800 ports, a DVI out port, Audio jacks (in and out), eSATA (data and power) port, and one Ethernet port along the sides. Aside from the number or connectivity interfaces, the DeskBook Pro also comes with a multi-card reader, plus two ModBay slots.

Zemno’s ModBay Technology adds (any two) expansion options for adding either a 500GB hard drive or an extra Li-Ion battery pack that adds up to 2.5 hours per. Zemno also lists another module called the iMod that adds a dock for connecting and charging Apple’s iPods and iPhone.

The DeskBook Pro is set to ship on January 10th for $500. The optional 500GB storage module costs $130, while the battery module costs $100.

Computer cooling company Arctic Cooling has just released a compact USB-powered laptop cooler called the Arctic NC. Unlike cooling pads that act as platforms under the laptop, the Arctic NC works as a ledge for propping the back of the laptop onto.

Two 60mm fans behind the laptop suck the air in, and the horizontal exhaust blows out the air under the laptop for more effective cooling– if this works like Antec’s Notebook Cooler To Go, which sports the same form factor, then it’s definitely more powerful than a slim cooling pad with weak fans.

Compatible with laptops from 12 to 19-inches, the Arctic NC also adds four USB ports for connecting other devices, and a fan speed controller for setting the fan speed from 800rpm (for quiet, energy-efficient operation) to 1,700rpm for maximum cooling performance.

Available in two colors (silver-grey and black), the Arctic NC has an MSRP of $31.50 (excluding taxes).
