There’s a rumor going around that Intel might be releasing a new dual core Atom for netbooks soon. Now, a dual core Atom isn’t exactly new since the Pine Trail Atom platform did come with the dual core N510 for low-power desktops, but this would be the first dual core Pine Trail Atom for netbooks if the rumors prove to be true. It’ll reportedly be called the N500, which is a logical step down from the N510 desktop Atom chip, but should still result in a low-power, low-heat chip that offers relatively long battery runtimes. Rumor: Intel prepping dual core Atom for netbooks?
Tuesday, March 9th, 2010MSI’s 15-hour Wind U160 netbook now available
Monday, March 8th, 2010
MSI’s Wind U160 netbook, the 10-inch Pine Trail Atom-powered portable that was listed to run for 10 hours on a charge, is now available. There has been a few changes since it was announced late last year though; the price has gone up from the announced $350 to $380, but the listed battery life has also been upsized from a good 10 hours to an awesome 15-hour runtime.
Have at you, Apple! HP’s Slate supports Adobe Flash
Monday, March 8th, 2010HP has just put out a new video that shows they’ll be working with Adobe for Flash support on their upcoming Slate device. The move is seen as a one-up move over Apple’s iPad (and Apple’s insistence on skipping Flash support), allowing HP’s portable to show Flash-based websites such as Hulu, along with a rather large percent of the top websites that use Flash animation and Flash-based video streaming. So take that, Apple. Or not. Since, you know, Jobs doesn’t care much for Adobe.
Still no word on when HP’s Slate will come out, although it does look pretty cool from where we’re sitting. The interface isn’t as polished as Apple’s, but it’s a Windows 7-kind of cool. Which is pretty much our way of saying “hey, at least it’s a full-featured porta-PC.”
Another iPad-looking slate spotted: the Ezy Tablet is a dead ringer
Monday, March 8th, 2010
There are iPad clones and there are iPad clones that are designed to look like the real thing. This latest iPad “inspired” device, the 10.2-inch Ezy Tablet PC looks pretty close up front, but the sides give it away. Other things that give it away? It’s powered by an Intel Atom platform and runs on a Windows 7 OS. But that’s not such a bad thing, mind you.
Acer working on frameless ultra-thin notebook
Monday, March 8th, 2010
According to a DigiTimes report (who in turn got the info from sources within the notebook industry), Acer is planning to come out with a new ultra-thin notebook with a touch keyboard and a glass lid. The screen will be made up of a single piece of reinforced glass substrate with a colored back serving as the lid, effectively shedding off having to add a plastic or aluminum shell. The touch keyboard should also help slim down the resulting notebook profile, potentially resulting in a notebook that should break down the barriers of what we know as ultra-slim design altogether.

Thursday, March 4th, 2010
Remember the Classmate PC? Intel’s rugged, low-cost laptop geared for education that helped turn basic, low-powered notebooks into what we now know as netbooks? Intel has just announced that they’ll be coming out with an update: a new Classmate PC tablet with a bigger 10-inch touchscreen.
Panasonic’s Toughbook C1 tablet claims to be “the world’s lightest”
Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010
Before anything else, let’s clear things up: specifically, they’re claiming that the Toughbook C1 is the world’s lightest 12.1-inch convertible tablet PC. Just so we can eliminate weight comparisons to slates that “cheat” by dropping the keyboard. Now that that’s out of the way, here’s the C1’s deal: weighing in at 3.2 pounds, the Toughbook C1 features a system built around Intel’s Core i5 processor, and a shell that can survive one-foot drops and up to 225 pounds of pressure. The keyboard is spill-resistant too, so you can rest assured that it’ll also survive the misadventures of the typical office klutz.

Intel upgrades the Atom, intros 1.86GHz N470 chip
Monday, March 1st, 2010
An Intel blog post just announced that the company will be expanding their Atom line of processors, with the introduction of the N470. It’s still the same Pine Trail chip aimed at netbooks, although the new processor number comes with a faster 1.83GHz clock—a step up compared to the existing 1.66GHz N450. Aside from the faster core clock, everything is still pretty much the same, with a 512k L2 cache size, DDR2-667 support, and, more importantly, the same 5.5W TDP that promises extended battery runtimes. We should see new netbooks running the faster 1.86GHz chip within the next few months.
