We all thought this was over after Apple took hits from just about every other big mobile brand then hit back with a demo page that shows that every one else has an antenna problem. Since Apple can’t change the way the iPhone 4 was designed, they then came out with the free bumper case program that hands out a free case to iPhone 4 owners as a solution. Apparently, “the solution” can still be tweaked to Motorola’s favor: they came out with a new ad (full image after the break) that shows the Droid X following a casual “no jacket required” dress code. Clever.

The available image is a little too low-res to read clearly, but here’s how the last paragraph goes:

At Motorola, we believe a customer shouldn’t have to dress up their phone for it to work properly. That’s why the DROID X comes with a dual antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like to make crystal clear calls without a bulky phone jacket. For us it’s just one of those things that comes as a given when you’ve been making mobile phones for over 30 years.

Apple’s antenna performance page most recently showed that the Droid X suffered from death grip too. Never mind that no one else can replicate the experiment though, at least not naturally. Unless you have Andre the Giant-sized mitts. Realistically, the 4-inch Droid X’s size alone makes it difficult to choke the signal out if you’re not trying to do it on purpose.

Dell just confirmed the price for the upcoming 5-inch Streak mobile tablet: it’ll be sold for $299 if you pick up the tablet-slash-Android smartphone along with a two-year AT&T contract or $549 if you want an unlocked version you can use with any mobile network. The pricing makes it significantly cheaper compared to Apple’s 3G-packing iPad that starts at $629, and could probably be better if you prefer a more mobile slate that can actually run Flash.

The problem is, no one knows when the Streak will be released—at least in the US. According to Dell’s website, the Streak will go on sale before the end of July, although a Dell spokesman recently mentioned in an interview that “the Dell Streak won’t go on sale in July.” It’s already been launched in the UK since last month, running on Android 1.6, although it’s being rumored that the US version might come loaded with an Android 2.1 operating system.

Despite the lack of info, it’s starting to look like a hit though—there are reports that the Streak’s pre-sale page has been getting a lot of orders way before Dell even outlined the price and release date.

While a recent ruling by a judge regarding the DMCA might seem like big news to the mobile modding community, Apple’s reaction is pretty tame. They recently released a statement that maintains the status quo: basically, they’re aware that we jailbreak our iPhones, they didn’t react to it back then, and they aren’t going to start now.

Here’s the official word from Apple:

Apple’s goal has always been to insure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone and we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience. As we’ve said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones as this can violate the warranty and can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably.

Again, it’s really nothing new. They know we jailbreak our iPhones, and they didn’t stop it. They come out with something new, we keep buying the new thing, find ways to break into the new thing, and they still won’t really do anything about it. As long as we, the consumers, understand that software piracy is still illegal (for those who hack into their iPhones for that reason), and that they won’t replace a busted device if it’s been jailbroken—then Apple seems to be pretty cool with it. And we’ve been cool with that.

Now, if only we can find a totally universal jailbreak app that can open up iOS 4 without having to go through hoops and bootrom restrictions, we’d be golden. (By the way, something like that is apparently coming soon.)

Apple just confirmed that they’ll be offering unlocked versions of the iPhone 4 to people who don’t want to get locked into a 2-year deal with, well, anyone. Now, if you live in North America and you’re not comfortable with running software hacks to unlock a normally carrier-locked iPhone 4 but you’re willing to put up with the unsubsidized price of around US$640-$750 for the 16GB/32GB models, this is definitely a feasible option. Provided that you can come up with a way to accurately snip your regular SIM card to fit the new microSIM format Apple uses on the iPhone 4 and iPad (or hope that your carrier can replace your regular SIM with a microSIM).

For the people already living in Canada, the iPhone is all set to launch via five carriers, including Bell, Fido, Rogers, Telus and Virgin Mobile for $199 and $299 wit a longer lock-in period of three years.

This is still going on? We all thought Apple kind of made their point when they demonstrated that other phones (specifically, the BlackBerry Bold 9700, Droid Eris, and Samsung Omnia II) also suffered from the death grip, but apparently, there’s room for more when they added the Nokia N97 mini and now, the Droid X to the list. The video demo on Apple’s smartphone antenna performance page shows that even the great Droid X’s signal can be choked out if you hold it in that really awkward, I’m-determined-to-prove-a-point way.

Maybe this is the end of it though. As far as we can remember, Motorola and Nokia round out the brands who recently ripped on the iPhone 4’s signal problems. Samsung just put out a subtle new ad that’s still obviously Antennagate-related though, so we’re expecting to see the Galaxy S up there too.

Oh wait, Microsoft kind of made a little poke when they said that the iPhone 4 might be Apple’s “Vista,” so we might see a Microsoft Kin phone being choked in the future as well. Or maybe not. No one really cared about the Kin.

If you already have an iPhone 4, download and install the iPhone 4 case program app (yeah, there’s an app for that. It’s to prevent fakers and case hoarding), sign in using your Apple ID, pick from a number of official Apple or licensed third-party cases, and wait around 3-5 weeks for delivery. There are currently seven design available: Apple Bumper, Belkin Shield Micra, Incase Snap Case, Griffin Motif, Griffin Reveal, Speck Fitted and Speck PixelSkin HD.

For existing iPhone 4 owners, you have until August 22 to apply for the free case. For everyone else on the fence, if you buy an iPhone 4 before September 30, they won’t be handing you a case on the spot. You’re still going to have to do the steps and apply for the free case within 30 days just like everyone else.

If you’ve been waiting for the white iPhone 4 that was supposed to be released later this month, you’re going to have to change your white iPhone 4 owning plans to later this year. Apple just put out a new two-sentence official statement that officially pushes the release back again. They didn’t get into any specifics, but they did mention something about having manufacturing problems. You still have options though: get a black iPhone and have it custom made to look like a non-existent generic white one for around $229 more.

Samsung never really issued a formal statement in reaction to Apple’s experiments that showed Samsung’s Omnia II suffering from death grip , until now. We just assumed that Samsung was cool with it since the iPhone does have some Samsung parts in it, and thought they just didn’ty plan to get into the whole Antennagate debate. This new ad says a lot though, even though it’s pretty short on actual words. You just gotta love the simple subtlety.

The whole “our-phone-can-maintain-a-better-signal-than-yours” debate is actually funny, though. Remember the good old days when mobile brands boasted about cameras, screen sizes and slim profiles? Now that we have all these advanced smartphones, we’re sweating about things like signal strength.

Acer’s Android-based Liquid Stream smartphone has finally been launched, with the UK getting first dibs via Expansys. It’s a little late for the party though; while the spec should still make for a nice high-end Android phone with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, Android 2.1 OS, 3.7-inch OLED screen and 5MP cam, it’ll have to go up against the recent wave of 4-inchers from HTC and Motorola now. Oh, and the iPhone 4.

It still isn’t necessarily a bad deal though; it’s a 3.7-incher for those who might feel that the Droid X and Evo 4G is a little bit too big for tighter pockets, and they could still offer this phone at a lower price point in markets where it goes up against the current big boys of the smartphone world. The features are rounded out by 720p HD recording capability, GPS and Wi-fi conenctivity, and access to the Android Marketplace for loading whatever app you need it to do.

It’s currently selling for the equivalent of around $610 for an unlocked unit, and is rumored to reach North American shores in October.
