Gamers have known this for years: There are loads of different surround sound gaming speaker kits, but Logitech’s Z-series have always been awesome. Of course, this will still probably pale in comparison to their older $400, 505-Watt Z-5500 set, but the Z506 is being offered as a more flexible set that can take any entertainment device, including portables, set-top boxes and game consoles aside from a PC—all for a cent under $100.

It’s still your typical set (if you consider a 5.1 surround sound set “typical”), with 75W of power across five satellites and a ‘woofer. As for the “flexibility” it touts, you get an RCA input connection as extra (for connecting set top boxes and consoles) besides the usual 3.5mm jack.

Now, 75W may not look like that big a number, but it should bring enough power to rock a regular-sized room. Certainly more than good enough for a 6-channel kit that costs $100. Something to look forward to if you’re in the market for an affordable do-it-all surround sound kit. It’s due out by August.

Here’s a video walkthrough from Logitech:

The Evoke Flow is a light, portable radio that sports more connections than the usual, with 802.11 b/g Wi-fi, USB, and a 3.5mm aux-in jack for connecting an iPod or other porta-player (and will fully support iPod functions through Pure’s optional i-10 dock). It’ll still play regular FM radio, but its highlight includes unlimited access to The Lounge—Pure’s website that’ll let you tune into any of more than 15,000 digital radio stations.

The $229 kit comes with a single 3-inch driver, but comes with a 3.5mm auxiliary-out for connecting external speaker sets, and features an OLED display, touch-sensitive controls, and a ChargePAK connector for adding a battery pack.

The Oasis Flow is built for the outdoors, with a weatherproof and splash-resistant body and a rechargeable ChargePAK battery. Priced at $249, it has a Wi-fi connection for tuning into digital radio streams, and an FM antenna for tuning in when you’re way out of range.

Pure's i-10 dock accessory gives the players full iPod dock-and-charge support.

A single 10W, 4-inch speaker is built into the rugged body for blasting 10W of audio from your hip, but a stereo connection will let you plug in headphones if you don’t want to disturb the wildlife (it’ll also let you plug in external speakers if you want to disturb the people in the other tent, though).

The $139 Siesta Flow is designed for the bedside table. It takes on the form of an alarm clock, but still comes with the full set of features found on Pure’s other Flow players: Wi-fi and FM connectivity, an aux-in connection for plugging in other audio sources, and iPod support via the optional i-10 dock. What makes it so intriguing is the ability to select from “365 different, amazing, weird and wonderful internet alarm sounds.” ‘Different’ and ‘amazing’ alarm sounds seem like a good idea, but waking up to weird alarm sounds? That’s something we’d like to check out. Just because it’s so damn intriguing.

Here’s a speaker-dock for your iPod that’s pretty unique: the Heritage Deluxe Table Radio by French company Revo, which is basically a dock that looks like an old radio from the 60’s. While it’s not quite as unique as, say, an iPod dock that’s shaped like a stool, this old-school radio packs in a lot of serious “right now” tech. See, this old-school wood-and-aluminum box isn’t a speaker with a slot for parking your ‘Pod. It’s a full DAB radio, with support for DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting), DAB+, FM and Wi-fi internet radio. The heritage also supports wireless audio streaming from a networked PC or Mac, which is so much more than what the average “new” speaker docks will give you.

The Heritage features a custom-designed 3-inch neodymium speaker driver and a 7W amplifier for pumping out sounds through the aluminum grille. Aside from the iPod and FM/DAB radio tuner, you can also play tunes through a USB port.

The dock on top will support anything from the 4th-gen iPod and iPod mini to newer iPod touch and classic models, and will display the track info on the OLED screen up front. It doesn’t fully support iPhones though, but it’ll still play and charge an iPhone if you turn it into an iPod touch by switching it to In-Flight mode. Other audio sources can also be plugged in via a generic 3.5-inch audio jack, and the Heritage box can in turn connect to a home entertainment system via stereo RCA, and optical out connections at the back.

The heritage also supports wireless audio streaming from a networked PC or Mac, which is so much more than what the average “new” speaker docks will give you.

It’s currently selling for £229.99 (around $340) over at Firebox, along with a rather non-retro-looking remote.

Here’s something that we’ve never seen before. It’s called the iTamtam M1, recently unveiled by French design company Branex Design (at least we’re guessing they’re French. Their website is in a language that sounds really French-y). It’s an iPod dock shaped like a stool. In other words, it’s an iPod dock-slash-stool that you can actually sit on.

There’s really not much else into it. It’s that simple: there’s an iPod dock along the top edge, while four 1.5-inch tweeters and a 5.25-inch subwoofer are crammed under the part where you usually park your hiney. It looks a bit dangerous to sit on while an iPod is docked into it, but the iTam Tam also comes with a 3.5mm jack for attaching other audio sources safely.

It’ll be available in different colors (pink, blue, green, orange, red, purple, yellow, black and white) for $570. $570! For a colored stool with speakers? Well, we guess it’s okay… if you have $570, an iPod, and an unexplainable need for a colored stool with speakers that’ll charge your iPod. (Who doesn’t?) It’s funny how this thing reminds us of that time we were high, thinking, “man I wish I had a stool with speakers that can charge my iPod.”

The XS-SR3 blasts 5W of total power in a compact body, with an Active Hyper Bass feature through a pair of Neodymium Magnet speakers. The TH-BA3 bears the distinction of being the world’s first dual wireless soundbar system, with both the satellites and subwoofer connecting wirelessly.

The 280-watt TH-BA3 is made up of a soundbar, subwoofer, and rear speakers that all connect to a receiver built into the soundbar (along with the decoder, controls, and transmitter). The 5.1 kit offers one analog and two optical digital inputs, and supports Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby ProLogic II surround signals.

The 4.1-channel TH-BS7 features an ultra slim design to match flat-panel HDTVs. The soundbar measures just 1.4 inches tall, and comes with a matching wall-mountable amplifier/control unit and a wireless ‘woofer. The slim kit is a bit weaker than the BA3, offering 180 watts of power through JVC’s Direct Drive speaker technology. The amplifier also decodes Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II signals, and has one analog and three optical digital inputs.

The TH-BA3 is priced at $650, while the slim TH-BS7 costs $600. Both systems will be available this month.

Olive has just released the Olive 4HD, a music server that features an internal 2TB drive that can hold up to 20,000 HD audio tracks or 6,000 CD-quality songs. Olive puts a lot of premium into sound quality though, and the 4HD is specced for audiophiles, with a high resolution digital to analog converter (Texas Instruments’ 192khz, 24-bit Burr-Brown PCM1792A DAC) for clear highs and lows.

The 4HD also comes with a TEAC CD-R/RW drive that allows for CD recording, and a colored 4.3-inch wide touchscreen LCD at the front for displaying song info and album art.

A number of connectivity options are present on the 4HD, including standard RCA analog and S/PDIF digital, and a USB port for connecting external sources and IR receivers. It’s also network-compatible, able to connect to the home network through wired LAN or Wi-fi 802.11n, and supports the usual digital audio formats, including WAV, FLAC, MP3 and AAC.

The Olive 4HD is available now for $2,000.

Sanyo has just launched the DMP-P1 and DMP-692, a pair of compact audio systems that feature basic clock and alarm functions as well as iPod docks for charging and playing.

The smaller DMP-P1 is basically a digital alarm clock that comes with the usual 2/24-hour clock function along with snooze and repeat alarm functions, and then some. It also comes with an AM/FM radio, an auxiliary line-in connection for connecting other audio players, and an Apple dock on top for charging and playing iPods. Connecting an iPod lets users set music files as an alarm (in which case, we highly recommend setting Alice in Chain’s “Them Bones” as a highly effective alarm), but it can also be set to wake you up by turning on the FM tuner.

The DMP-P1 also features a blue-backlit LCD display, a BassXpander feature for boosting the bass, and a DC battery backup mode in case the power goes out.

The DMP-692 is a more full-featured kit that also comes with the P1’s alarm/clock functions and AM/FM tuner, but like iHome’s iP88, it comes with dual docks for charging and playing a pair of iPods or iPhones simultaneously. It offers better sound quality with an integrated subwoofer, Dynamic Bass Boost control, and EQ presets, and is more refined with a backlit touch-sensitive panel, a full 20-function remote, and 40 radio presets. A battery backup is also available.

Both products are scheduled to ship by late October. The P1 will sell for $40, while the DMP-692 Dual Dock Music System is priced at $90.
