After announcing that they’ll be showing off a 55-inch OLED TV at CES in Las Vegas next week, LG has described another huge screen in store for the trade show: an 84-inch 3D LCD TV. It’s not just huge and it won’t just give you 3D goodness (via passive Cinema 3D glasses) – this thing is crisp, thanks to a 3840 x 2160 resolution that packs in four times the pixels of your usual 1080p HDTV.

Of course, there’s not much content to be had out there to take advantage of such a resolution so we’re not sure about the demand for 4k TV sets (or if anyone aside from gajillionaires will be able to score one), but hey – if they ever do create 4k content and you happen to need a gargantuan TV to fill out your hugely empty living room, you can check if this is what you need at CES.

LG has just unveiled a 55-inch OLED (organic light-emitting diode) TV, which sets the record for rocking the world’s largest OLED TV screen. The particular set they’ve unveiled is just a prototype to show off what you can do with an oxide thin-film transistor instead of the usual polysilicon used on smaller OLED screens – basically, it’s LG’s way of upping the screen size without raising the price (or at least not too much).

Featuring a contrast ratio of 100,000:1, the “ultra definition” screen also promises a lower error rate and clearer picture with more colors compared to standard LCD screens, while the OLED tech makes ultraslim designs possible. The prototype measures only 5mm thick, making it slimmer than a standard pen.

Since it’s still a prototype, this TV doesn’t have pricing or release info yet, but they’ll be showing this one off at CES 2012 in Vegas, but they’re probably working on a promised consumer model for mid-2012.

Sharp has introduced the Aquos Quattron LC-80LE632U, a huge 80-inch TV that’s being tagged as the ‘largest commercially-available LED TV’, which would be perfect for fitting into ‘the world’s emptiest living room wall.’ The TV sports an LED-lit, 1080p LCD TV panel and Wi-fi connectivity, giving you access to Netflix, CinemaNow and Vudu straight out of the predictably huge box it ships in.

Besides the really large screen, what else is there to expect from a screen that stretches (diagonally) to 6.5 feet? More of the usual, really. The LC-80LE632U is listed to offer a 6,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and a 120Hz screen for handling smooth action… smoothly, as well as a pair of USB ports for playing media straight from a flash drive. Basically nothing much more than what you’d get from a high-end 55-incher, but you have to realize that you’re getting a screen area that’s more than double the screen real estate of an already-huge 55-inch display.

It also supports Sharp’s Aquos Advantage Live feature, which will let you connect, set up, and tune the TV remotely via the internet.

The Sharp LC-80LE632U goes on sale in October for $5,500.

That’s a lot of seemingly random numbers, but that’s exactly what Sony pulled out during their keynote presentation at E3. The new TV is specifically designed to be used with the PS3, giving players an affordable 3D-capable display that comes bundled with a pair of active shutter 3D glasses.

The TV’s most notable feature is its ability to show and hide parts of the screen from the other players. Handy for split-screen competitive gaming, where, say, player 1 wouldn’t be able to check out where player 2’s setting up an ambush. The new TV is also capable of 2D 1080p content, and comes with a built-in 2.1-channel audio system.

At $430, it’s a relatively affordable kit for what it does for gamers, especially when you consider the fact that it already comes bundled with one pair of 3D glasses and a six-foot HDMI cable (an extra pair of 3D glasses will cost $70). The TV is set to ship in the fall.

When Samsung announced that they were about to release what they labeled as ‘world’s largest consumer 3D TV,’ we couldn’t imagine anything more awesome than having a 75-inch 3D-capable HDTV sitting smack dab on a living room wall. Unless, of course, someone comes up with an even larger 3D-capable HDTV. Apparently, Samsung didn’t look around that much when they came up with the ‘world’s largest’ claim, because Bang & Olufsen’s 85-inch BeoVision 4-85 is about to start shipping. (Samsung apparently holds the title for ‘largest 3D LCD TV’ though, since this set rocks a plasma screen).

The B&O’s premium HDTV comes with an $85,000 price tag, and packs a BeoLab 10 integrated center speaker that features the company’s Acoustic Lens Technology, which throws out sound in a 180-degree angle. The plasma screen also optimizes itself to help deal with the diminishing display quality over time.

The model headed for the US will come with a motorized stand that tilts and orients itself whenever the TV’s turned on, plus a remote that can adjust the angle.

It’s due out in the US in June, but if 85 inches still isn’t enough for you, a 103-incher is set to follow it later this summer.

If you’re one of those people who keep complaining about the price of movie tickets these days or you’re just easily annoyed by the distractions from other people in the theater, then here’s a solution: pick up the world’s largest 3D TV and bring that theater experience home (but without the annoying public). Samsung is ready to let you do that pretty soon: Samsung just announced the 75-inch D9500, also known as ‘the world’s largest consumer 3D TV.’

The D9500 features the company’s LED-backlit Black Diamond Panel LCD, and comes with internet connectivity to give you access to online content (such as a web browser, Skype, Facebook and Twitter) from the comfort of your couch. And just so you don’t have to wrestle with online content using a clunky IR remote, the TV also comes with a QWERTY remote.

You’re going to have to put up a serious amount of dough to own this baby though. Costing the equivalent of $17,600 when it goes up for pre-order in Korea by the end of the month, it might take you a lifetime (and maybe more) before you see an investment return from skipping the movies. But hey, at least you can press pause at home if you have to use the can or pick up a sandwich. If someone’s phone rings in the middle of the movie, it’s most likely your phone and no one’s going to think you’re an ass for answering it. Or you can wear a really tall hat and no one’s going to ask you to take it off because they can’t see. You just can’t put a price on that.

Here’s another 3D HDTV that we should be seeing on store shelves soon. Unlike so many others, this one should stand out a little bit more though, and not because of it’s 50-inch screen size or support for 3D. Called the Philips Cinema 21:9 Gold, this set has a wider aspect ratio – like the name says – that stretches to 21:9 compared to the usual 16:9 HDTV we’re so used to seeing these days.

The 3D method used here is a little bit different too. Called Easy 3D by Philips, 3D content on this TV can be viewed using lighter, cheaper glasses compared to active shutter types. The display also features instant conversion, which allows you to watch regular 16:9 content (if you don’t mind blank spaces on either side of the screen), and 3D conversion that can turn regular 2D content into the stuff that you watch with your cheaper, lighter Easy 3D glasses.

The Cinema 21:9 Gold sports an LED backlit screen with a 100Hz refresh rate, Ambilight Spectra 2 that throws soft light on the wall behind it, and supports the company’s Smart TV feature that gives it access to web content such as apps, media streams and social network updates.

No word on pricing and availability yet, but while the Easy 3D feature might make it easy to pick up a bunch of cheap 3D glasses to use on it, don’t expect a 50-inch LED TV with a 21:9 aspect ratio to come cheap.
If you love your 3D video-watching lifestyle, you’ve got to appreciate the way 2011 is starting to look like. LG just gave a preview of what they plan to unveil at CES next month, and it’s going to be huge. Quite literally. So huge that it’s down for breaking at least one record for being the largest 3D-capable HDTV, going a full foot over the existing 60-inch size ceiling.

It’s just a preview, and not the official launch, so the specs are a bit incomplete, but here’s what we know: the LZ9700 features a 480Hz refresh rate to get the 3D images moving smoothly, LED backlighting, and internet connectivity for playing online videos and getting access to the TV app store.

LG also showed off a smaller portable TV that tunes into the new mobile ATSC format. The portable TV will also support glasses-free TV and is listed to tune into mobile broadcasts even while moving at 200km/h (or 124mp/h). It’s still a prototype which may or may not ship as is, but the mobile data chip running the show can be used on smartphones and other portable devices. Actually, it’s on everyone’s 3D movie wish list, since it’s pretty good. Problem is, Panasonic scored the exclusive rights to distribute the movie until February of 2012, which makes it a bit difficult to get a copy of the 3D version. Simply put, it’s out there but you’re going to have to buy a Panasonic Viera 3D TV to get it off a bundle if you want a copy right now, or you can wait for the regular release when Panny’s deal expires in early 2012.

Could be an easy choice if you’re in the market for a 3D HDTV anyway, but if you already have the 3D hardware, it’s just plain annoying.

Don’t give up so soon though; if you really want it, there’s another way. Apparently, a lot of people who shelled out for Panasonic’s 3D TVs have been peddling their free Avatar 3D BD copies on eBay, so if you’re willing to spend somewhere between $150 to $200, put on your bidding hat, sharpen your sniping skills, and check ‘em out here.

Anyone looking for a big 3D LCD TV to go with a spacious den or a similarly huge pair of 3D glasses? LG has introduced the Infinia 72LEX9 in South Korea, a new model that they’re claiming to be the world’s largest consumer 3D LCD TV. The 72 inches’ worth of flatscreen real estate features LG’s LED-backlit 480Hz TruMotion panel, Spot Control pixel dimming tech, and connectivity that lets it connect to the internet and to other DLNA appliances within the home network.

The net connection lets it stream videos from NetCast web TV and YouTube or flip through photos on Picasa. It’s currently out now in Korea for the equivalent of $7146, and it’s expected to ship to the US in mid-2011. If you were thinking about it, that should be enough time to clear some space for this 72-incher. Or find a way to free up around seven grand.
