Mimo has put out two new USB-powered monitors with a modern twist. Called the Mimo Magic Touch, the two models are still basically 10.1-inch secondary mini-screens that extend your Windows 7 desktops, but adds capacitive touch tech that’ll let you tap intuitively on the screen (tablet-like) in place of using a regular mouse.

Mimo is offering two Magic Touch versions: a basic Mimo Magic Touch that’s powered by a USB connection, and the Magic Touch Deluxe that adds two more USB ports on its base and comes with an AC adapter for powering up the extra USB devices. Other than that, they both feature a four multi-touch points, a 1024 x 600 resolution, 200cd/m2 brightness, 300:1 contrast ratio and a 16ms response time.

The screens can be removed from their base docks for use as a “tethered tablet” or mounted on a wall or rack. Both are designed to work perfectly with Windows 7 systems, but will work as regular (non-touch) displays on Win 2000/XP/Vista and Mac OS.

The Mimo Magic Touch ships on December 12th, but can be pre-ordered now for $260. The Magic Touch Deluxe costs $295 and ships on December 20th.

If you’re like us, then one display just won’t cut it for work. Let’s face it: even on a desktop setup that already comes with a 22-inch widescreen, things just happen to be easier when you have extra screen real estate to work with. For those reasons, moving from your office’s multi-monitor desktop to a single laptop monitor on the road can be a tough adjustment. Here’s a quick solution from AOC: they just announced a 15.6-inch mobile LCD display that uses a single USB 2.0 connection for both power and data. That single USB connection makes it a cinch to pack, set up, and connect, and, well, you get less cable clutter.

Otherwise, it’s a pretty standard 15.6-inch digital display. The AOC e1649fwu sports a wide 16:9 aspect ratio, supports a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768 @60MHz, a brightness level of 250 cd/m2, a high 50,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 5ms response time, and WLED backlighting for power efficiency. This monitor is listed to run on 8 watts of power, making it possible to connect more than one display to a laptop or desktop, as long as the power supply can handle it.

Naturally, the monitor is also designed for portability, featuring a slim, tapered frame with a “Smart Stand” at the back that can be folded into the body for easy packing. AOC didn’t list the weight, but we’re assuming that this display’s designed to be light as well.

The AOC e1649fwu is due out in October for $139.

The effect comes from a combination of two 3D-specific technologies: a parallax barrier 3D display, and a built-in camera sensor that tracks your eye movement. The two techs work together to let you enjoy the 3D effect without being restricted to a certain angle range (so you can move your head freely while using it) and without having to don a goofy pair of 3D glasses. No word on pricing yet, but it’s listed to be out in Korea this month, followed by an international release “in the latter part of 2011.” Official press release after the break.

Press Release:

SEOUL, July, 13, 2011 –- LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled the world’s first glassesfree monitor utilizing eye-tracking technology to maintain an optimal 3D image from a range of viewing angles. The 20-inch D2000 monitor was developed as a fully functional entertainment display capable of reproducing games, movies and images in all their realistic glory.

“With a full line-up of 3D TVs, laptops, projectors and smartphones, LG Electronics is by far and away the industry leader in all things 3D.” said Si-hwan Park, Vice President of the Monitor Division at LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “LG’s position has always been that 3D will and must eventually function without glasses. The D2000 is a look at what the future has in store.”

The D2000’s 3D effect comes courtesy of glasses-free parallax barrier 3D technology, and the application of the world’s first eye-tracking feature to the monitor. The combination of parallax barrier and eye-tracking in a single unit promises to open up new horizons for glasses-free 3D products.

Existing glasses-free 3D technologies generally require viewers to stay within a tightly restricted angle and distance to perceive the 3D images. However, the D2000 has done much to resolve this issue, allowing viewer much freer movement and more comfortable viewing. Eye tracking in the D2000 works via a special camera sensor attached to the monitor which detects changes in the user’s eye position in real-time. With this information, the monitor calculates the angle and position of the viewer and adjusts the displayed image for the optimal 3D effect.

In addition to playing back existing 3D content, the D2000 has a highly refined 2D to 3D conversion feature which adds a new dimension to existing movies and game playing.

The D2000, available in Korea this month, will be introduced in other markets around the world in the latter part of 2011.

There are slim LCD displays, and there are really slim displays. LG’s 21.5-inch E2290V? It’s not only slim at 7.2mm (which LG described as their slimmest ever), it’s also fast enough for high-end gaming and HD videos. For $450, here’s what you get when this monitor gets launched next year: a full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) LED-backlit screen, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 250 cd/m2 luminance, and a 2ms response time that makes it good enough for 3D gaming using Nvidia’s 3D Vision kit. The rear inputs include analog, digital and HDMI ports, plus a package that includes LG’s Image Boosting software for enhancing videos from streaming sites like YouTube. The exterior design’s definitely a looker too. We’re suckers for shiny things. Larger photos after the break.

Called the iMo Eye9, this display features a 1024 x 600 resolution for adding nine more inches of screen real estate to PCs and Macs. Completely powered by USB, the Eye9 also comes with a detachable 1.3MP webcam for video chatting, and a stylus that also doubles as a stand.

It’s a pretty flexible device. Thanks to the USB connection, it can be used on computers that doesn’t have a free display port, and can be positioned in a landscape or portrait orientation. It’s also pretty light at 1.5 pounds, allowing you to just pick it up and use it as a connected touchscreen tablet, or just left alone on the desk to work as a digital picture frame.

Touch-based accuracy might not be as sharp as you’d want though; the screen uses resistive touch technology, but that’s what the stylus is for.

The iMo Eye9 will be available on November 20 for $230. An optional Flex-Arm Mount can be bought for $40.

AOC just unveiled a new line of display that boasts of really slim, half-inch thick LCD displays. Tagged as the Razor LED, the new line of slim displays comes in four sizes that range from 18.5 to 23 inches, feature a wide 16:9 aspect ratio, and LED backlighting. The line also touts a high dynamic contrast ratio of 50,000,000:1 and a 5ms response time, which doesn’t necessarily make them high-end performers for people who need high-end displays, but they certainly make up for it in style.

Besides the obviously slim frame, the Razor LED displays also feature hidden touch-sensitive buttons that light up on the base, and not on the display frame where they’re usually found. The monitors are already built to be mounted on a wall right out of the box too, with a VESA-compatible base that can be folded back, all ready to be mounted onto a wall bracket right out of the box.

They’re already shipping in Europe, but should be available internationally soon enough.

Apple’s Retina Display has been described and reviewed as being all kinds of awesome. It’s a technical wonder, fitting all those pixels (326ppi) into a smartphone’s screen, but it might not be considered “the best” for long. Ortustech, a joint-venture between Casio and Toppan printing, has just unveiled the world’s smallest full HD display, fitting a 1920 x 1080 resolution into a 4.8-inch screen.

According to the company, it’s all made possible thanks to their HAST (Hyper Amorphous Silicon TFT) microfabrication tech that gives it a Retina Display-busting pixel density of 458ppi as well as a 160-degree viewing angle and 16 million colors. It could find its way into mobile TV monitors soon, and could probably be used on tablets and phones if you don’t mind rocking a really small 4.8-inch tablet or a really bulky 4.8-inch phone.
3D gaming in a box! Viewsonic has just launched the V3D241wm-LED monitor, a 24-inch monitor that’s designed to handle the fast refresh rates you’ll need to run 3D games and videos. A fast refresh rate isn’t that unique these days, but here’s what makes this display special: it comes packaged with a pair of active 3D glasses, making it ready for 3D games and videos as soon as you plug it in. (Provided you have a graphics card and Blu-ray drive that can handle the 3D content, of course.)

For handling 3D content, the V3D241wm-LED features a 120Hz frame rate and 2ms response time, while the LED screen sports a brightness of 300 nits and a contrast ratio of 20,000,000:1. A pair of integrated 2W stereo speakers may not bring the boom, but it should tide you over if you need audio in a pinch. An Eco mode is also present, which is listed to reduce power consumption by up to 50% compared to the average display.

It’s available in the UK for £330, or around US$527.

This 9-incher by Panasonic, called the MW-90, comes with the typical features you’d expect from a digital frame (photo, audio and video playback support and SD memory card slot) but comes with a potentially useful addition in the form of an iPhone dock for media playback and charging.

It’s a pretty simple addition, really. While anyone could use a digital frame for displaying whatever media files you can stuff into an SD card slot, this device will let you show off anything else that’s stored in your iPhone without having to move them to an SD card slot first (which could take up time since the iPhone doesn’t have a card slot). It also comes with its own 2GBs of internal storage space, so the slideshow of your trip to the beach doesn’t have to end when you pocket your iPhone.

The MW-20 comes with an integrated speaker with digital signal processing (which, coupled with the iPhone interface, technically makes it a speaker dock with a big screen), a wall mount, and typical calendar and clock functions. An ambient light sensor automatically adjusts screen brightness depending on available light in the room to save on power, and can be set in a landscape or portrait orientation.

It all sounds simple, right? Unfortunately, that spacious 9-inch screen and extra iPhone dock comes with a price: it’s set to sell for $250 when it ships in November.

Press Release:

Panasonic Announces Digital Photo Frame – Complete With Stereo Sound System for Playing Photos, Music and Videos With Exceptional Quality

The MW-20 features an environmentally-conscious power-saving feature, with a luminance sensor that automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen according to the room lighting. For instance, when a room is dark, the MW-20 automatically shuts off. The Panasonic MW-20 will be available in late-November 2010 with a suggested retail price of $249.95. For more information, visit www.panasonic.com.

New Panasonic MW-20 is a Versatile and Stylish Multimedia System, Compatible with iPod Touch® and iPhone® for Convenient Playback

SECAUCUS, N.J., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ — Panasonic today announced the MW-20, a digital photo frame that doubles as a stereo sound system, complete with iPod Touch® and iPhone® compatibility – using the supplied cradle to display photos and play music stored on the popular mobile devices is easy and convenient. The MW-20, a slim multimedia system, also charges the iPod Touch/iPhone while it is connected to the cradle.

The Panasonic MW-20 can play back videos and photos on its large, high-resolution 9-inch screen, while incorporating advanced audio technology to provide superb sound quality.

Below the screen, there is a 5.6-mm Super Slim Semi Dome Speaker and a diffuser that optimizes the sound. In addition, the built-in DSP (Digital Signal Processor) adjusts the audio signal to suit the audio characteristics of this speaker system.

“The Panasonic MW-20 has a stylish and slim design that will complement any home decor and given its versatility to display photos, videos, play music and even charge an iPhone – we think this will be a welcomed addition this holiday season,” said David Fisher, Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. “Beyond its design and versatility, the MW-20 is also a powerful gadget – with exceptional sound quality to listen to music and a large nine-inch screen to view digital photos and videos.”

The MW-20 has an Adjustable Angle Display(1) system that allows the angle to be changed to suit the viewing direction. With the supplied fixture, the MW-20 can be positioned in landscape orientation or hung on a wall. The MW-20 can display photos shot with a digital still camera by inserting an SD Memory Card into its slot. The MW-20 has 2GB of built-in memory for additional storage. The MW-20 features the LUMIX Scene Mode Playback function, which enables users to play back selected groups of photos shot with a Panasonic LUMIX digital camera using the iA Intelligent Scene Selector mode (Night Scenery, Portrait, Scenery, etc.). The MW-20 features 15 different display patterns to show a calendar, clock, photo – whichever combination the user prefers.

That’s a handy thing to have on a vacation or a company trip that mixes business with a bit of downtime; a pocket-sized device that’ll shoot videos from the hip and then show them on the wall for everyone to watch right after.

The Z20 comes with its own 2GB internal memory, plus a microSD card slot that allows for expansion. It’s listed to be able to come up with a 65-inch projection, with the ability to act as a separate projector that you can plug other sources—like set-top boxes, consoles, and notebooks for presentations—into. For showing HD videos onto other displays, the Z20 also comes with A/V connections and an HDMI adapter for porting photos and videos to an HDTV.

It’s set to be released next month in Europe for the equivalent of around $475.
