Startup company Lockitron has come up with a second-gen door lock that can be locked or unlocked using a smartphone, providing for an interesting way to upgrade your digital home. While it basically uses the same concept – it’ll let you use a mobile phone to lock or unlock it – the new model has an easier installation process that goes over your existing door lock.
The wireless door lock features Bluetooth connectivity, which allows the user to control it wirelessly using the simple two-button app. But if you’ve got your hands full, the device will also unlock the door automatically once it senses that you (and your phone) gets in range.
The new version also comes with Wi-fi connectivity that will let you control the lock remotely using a web app, a feature that should come in handy when you need to let guests come in when you’re away. The device will also work with older phones, letting you lock or unlock your door using commands set via text.
The new Lockitron device is currently up for preorder for $149 each. The next batch of orders are expected to ship in May, 2013.
