Remember that rumor that Apple was working on a smaller, cheaper iPad to compete with Google’s Nexus 7 and Amazon’s new tablets? Well, it looks like Google and Asus might be planning to out-cheap them by coming up with an even cheaper version of the Nexus 7 before the year ends.
According to the DigiTimes report, sources said that Google and Asustek is prepping two new versions of the Nexus 7; one that will cost $199, and another that will be priced at $99. The source also mentioned that the two new tablets will be thinner and will use TN panels by Taiwan-based HannStar Display. It’s also expected to be out by the end of 2012.
If true, this new tablet looks like a serious competitor if they could manage to keep the quality up without sacrificing too much to keep the price down. At $99, it’s hard to imagine a tablet that can still maintain the current Nexus 7’s 1280 x 800 screen resolution and quad-core Tegra 3 processor.
