Logitech has introduced the TV Cam HD, a premium webcam that hooks up with any HDTV for making Skype video calls without needing a computer, tablet or smartphone. Unlike previous webcams, the TV Cam HD doesn’t require an internet-connected TV running a Skype app, or one with a USB port – this cam comes loaded with the software needed, and can hook up with any display (a TV or computer monitor) with a vacant HDMI port.
The camera also features a built-in Wi-fi and Ethernet connection, which will let it connect to the internet on its own, making it a handy add-on to a TV that doesn’t come with internet connectivity. A remote control also comes with the package, which will let you log-in and navigate through the Skype interface as well as control the camera’s angle (the camera features a wide-angle lens, with software that will let you zoom in or out, or digitally pan and tilt the frame).
The TV Cam HD features Carl Zeiss optics for delivering 720p HD video, boosted by Logitech’s own ‘Fluid Crystal’ tech that promises sharper video and bright images in low light. Four microphones are also built-in, featuring noise reduction for clarity, while an integrated ringer (a feature that works even when the TV is off) will alert you if you’ve got a call coming in.
Looks pretty handy to have around if you’re into doing Skype calls from your TV, while the spec certainly looks good if you’re into quality. The only question left here is: are you willing to spend $200 for a webcam?
If you are, the Logitech TV Cam HD is now up for pre-orders.
