If you replaced your in-car music player and dedicated GPS nav kit with a smartphone, here’s something that should help keep your hands on the wheel: TomTom has launched a pair of hands-free car kits for smartphones that promises to enhance voice call quality while driving.
While it looks like your regular in-car phone holder, it does offer a few bonuses that make it handy to have around while driving. The car kit features a built-in noise and echo cancellation system that reduces ambient and background noise for voice calls, which it pumps out through a 2W built-in speaker. The kit also comes with a wired microphone extension that you can position closer to the driver (clipped to the visor or A-pillar, for example) for clearer calls.
The car kit can also pair with a Bluetooth hands-free audio system, letting you use your phone’s voice recognition features without taking your hands off the wheel.
The TomTom Hands-Free Car Kit comes in two versions to support iPhone (with a 30-pin connector) and Android devices (with a micro USB interface). Both versions feature an adjustable clamp for holding different-sized devices and iPhones (3GS, 4, 4S supported) with a case.
No word on availability yet, but it’s expected to cost around $100 when it hits North America.
