With just about everyone rocking a Bluetooth-capable smartphone, media player or tablet, looking for a portable speaker kit that can stream music really isn’t that hard to do these days. If you value sound quality from a speaker kit, you’ve got options too. But what if you’re an audiophile who needs a mobile speaker that can hook up via Bluetooth and actually sound good? There aren’t too many of those going around, but here’s an option for mobile audiophiles: the ClarityHD Micro Bluetooth speaker from Monster.
Like the name says, the ClarityHD Micro Bluetooth speaker is a compact speaker kit that streams music wirelessly via Bluetooth. The ‘HD’ part in its name is what sets this kit apart, referring to the speaker’s support for AAC and apt-X audio encoding for high-definition sound — the only compact wireless speaker in the market with HD audio support (or so Monster says).
Besides high-quality audio support and playback, the ClarityHD Micro also features a built-in microphone that allows it to work as a wireless speakerphone. The integrated mic will also let you give voice commands to the speaker, allowing you to ask “what’s the battery level?” and get an answer, or command it to pair with a mobile device without having to move a finger. This last bit is probably a little unnecessary since it’s a tiny mobile kit after all, but it’s still a nice touch that you should expect from a premium device.
The built-in battery is listed to last for five hours after a charge via USB, while a 3.5mm connection at the back allows it to hook up with other non-Bluetooth devices. The ClarityHD Micro’s look can also be customizable with a removable front grill. The product page lists five grill colors (black, white, green, pink and blue), but didn’t indicate if the extra panels are bundled with the package or sold separately.
The Monster ClarityHD Micro costs $230 – it’s pretty steep for a palm-sized mobile speaker, but if you’re looking for top-end quality, here’s your baby.
