If you own an iPad, then you likely already know this: sometimes, the built-in speakers at the back just can’t cut it. While the whole slim tablet is a wonder of design, let’s just say that if I had a penny for every time I had to cup my hand around the bottom edge and hold it close to my face to hear audio from a YouTube video… well, I’d have a lot of pennies right now. While you can always hook it up with a headset, plug it into a set of speakers or park it on a speaker dock, sometimes, these solutions just aren’t handy. Well, this certainly looks handy enough: Called the Zooka from Carbon Audio, it’s a single-piece speaker kit specifically designed to work with Apple’s MacBooks and iOS devices.
While it works with just about any device thanks to a Bluetooth connection and an audio in port and designed to work with Apple’s line of portables, it works better with a MacBook or iPad specifically thanks to a slot that perfectly fits over a MacBook’s lid and the iPad’s edge. It looks to work best for the iPad though; the curved design should make holding the tablet a bit more comfortable in the hand, and if you ever get tired, the package also includes a stand (and besides, the MacBook’s built-in speakers work well enough).
The Zooka features a power button and volume controls along the body, as well as a built-in microphone that lets it serve as a speakerphone. Carbon Audio didn’t mention the speaker’s specs or battery details, but it’s listed to offer “extraordinary sound quality”.
The Zooka will be available in nine colors (black, blue, dark grey, green, orange, pink, purple, red and teal) for $99.95 when it’s released in August.
