It looks like the rumor mill was spot-on after all: we’re about to see an all-new Google-branded Nexus tablet real soon. While signs that point to this fact have been constantly popping up for months now – it recently popped up as the device that took this unremarkable photo of an office ceiling – the actual photo of the product never came up. Until now. A leaked training document found its way into the hands of Gizmodo Australia, revealing what the Nexus 7 is going to look like, specs and details, as well as prices and launch dates.
First off, it’s been all but confirmed that the new slate will indeed be called the Nexus 7, and it’s going to be built by Asus. The document shows details that collaborate with really early reports that have been going around since March, detailing a compact, 7-inch tablet that’s based on the Eee Pad MeMo tablet that Asus unveiled at CES. According to the leak, the Nexus 7 will pack a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, a GeForce 12-core GPU and 1GB of RAM.
Up front, the Nexus 7 will feature a 7-inch IPS display that offers a 178-degree viewing angle and a 1280 x 800 resolution, along with a 1.2MP front-facing camera. It doesn’t mention anything about a rear camera, so it looks like this is it in terms of photography (something that we really don’t mind). The built-in battery is listed to last nine hours between charges.
The Nexus 7 is believed to be the launch platform for Google’s Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) update – both of which are expected to be announced at the Google I/O Conference this week. While the document didn’t detail the OS itself, it does mention that it’s going to sport NFC tech, and will feature Google Wallet and Android Beam.
Two versions of the Nexus 7 will be out in July: an 8GB version that costs $199, and a 16GB model that costs $249. It looks like the rumors were right on this part as well: Google’s all set to go head-to-head with Amazon (and the Kindle Fire, specifically) with this one, and they’re bringing a tablet with a comparable price point and a better spec list to the fight.
