Remember when Steve Jobs said that if you needed a stylus an your smartphone or tablet, then you’ve already failed? Well it looks like the post-Jobs version of Apple is looking to rethink all that. An Apple patent application for an optical stylus just turned up at the USPTO website, detailing a digital pen design that packs a bit more tech than what you’d normally find on a third-party pen with a capacitive-friendly tip.
Simply called an optical stylus, the accessory features an optical camera at the tip and an on-board image processor inside, to go along with pressure sensors, accelerometer, and a wireless receiver. Of course, a patent application doesn’t ensure that we’ll ever see this thing get released but if it looks like something that Apple-toting creatives are going to want to work with if they ever decide to take it to production. At the very least, it looks handy for Draw Something.
