George Romero and, more recently, Robert Kirkman taught us to never underestimate zombies. The undead that ravage the landscape in post-apocalyptic modern literature have been known for their insatiable hunger for human limbs and brains, and a penchant for swarming on you just when you’re about to get your groove on with a fellow survivor. However, in the recently released mobile game Zombro, the zombie element is far more productive than your average bag of animated, chomping decaying flesh. And it’s one fun puzzle game that’ll get you standing in that fine line between casually gaming and blatantly addicted.
Published by News Corp subsidiary Making Fun and released just earlier today, Zombro is a puzzle game where you control a zombie through various obstacles. The undead protagonist in question looks like a black humanoid splotch with yellow eyes and a cracked skull with its brain exposed—something the official press release describes as “adorable.” Oh, and then there’s also the obligatory yearning for brains.

The premise here is that you guide the zombie to a trip around the US, helping him go through obstacles as you complete 50 puzzles situated within states, and collect blood along the way. And as you begin playing, you realize that the zombie you are manning will need to be dismembered quite a few times to complete each level. Yes, the adorable zombie can be cut three ways to help you successfully beat each level. The legs can run and jump around the levels, the upper body can crawl under low ceilings, and the brain and squeeze into tight, smaller crevices by tilting your phone. As part of the challenge, you will need to get to each level’s exit whole, with limbs re-attached.
As odd as it sounds, the dismemberment is quite an ingenious element that will get you pondering about the best ways to avoid bear traps, swinging chunks of wood and other hurdles to your success. Finishing a level rewards you with brains (of course), and these you can use to purchase items like bowling balls, bombs, and other items to make your journey easier. You can also buy wifebeaters and shirts to dress up your zombie.
Overall, Zombro is a fun mobile game, packed with challenges that’ll keep you at it for hours. And unlike most good games out there, it won’t require an Internet access to play although you will need to hook up with a wireless connection for premium in-game items. It’s a free download for iOS and Android devices.
