While it looks like a standard speaker stand, albeit a very well-designed one by Steffen Schmelling, the Beoplay A3 by B&O Play (Bang & Olufsen’s line of designer portables) offers a lot more under that slim triangular shell. To be a bit more specific, it packs in four quality speakers under the grille that covers the front bezel, turning your iPad into a premium media player (or a really expensive alarm clock) for your bedside table.
The four speakers under the grille are composed of three half-inch tweeters and one 2-inch woofer to give you a nice range of sound with great depth. Under the polycarbonate plastic and aluminum frame, the Beoplay A3 also features a D-class amplifier, its own battery pack – it’s listed to be good for five hours of playback, but you can plug it in for extended runtimes – and an orientation sensor that it uses to activate the right speakers (and give you “great sound”) depending on whether it’s positioned on its side or on its back.
The A3 comes with adapters that will let you fit in any iPad, as well as a dock connector for charging the tablet while it’s in there.
It’s currently listed as available for preorders on B&O’s site for £450 (around $730). Yeah, it’s pricey for a speaker stand – as well-designed as it is – but you don’t expect B&O’s designer stuff to come cheap, did you? No word on a release date yet, but you can sign up to be notified once it starts shipping.
