Panasonic’s first smartphone is now available in the UK for £364.99 (around $600), SIM-free. It probably won’t cause a blip on your radar if you’re into smartphones with a top-end spec since it only offers a dual-core 1GHz processor and Android 2.3, but it’s definitely worth a look if you’re in the market for a reasonably nice performer that you can take with you on your next outdoor adventure, thanks to its rugged build. The Panasonic Eluga comes with IP57 certification, with a sealed body that can survive dust, as well as a 30-minute dip in 1 meter of water.
Despite the rugged features, it doesn’t look – or feel – like a cheap rubbery toy. It’s actually a pretty handsome kit that features a slim, 7.8mm-thick frame, and a slim bezel surrounding the 4.3-inch, 540 x 960-resolution OLED screen. The spec is rounded out by a dual-core 1GHz TI OMAP processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, and an 8MP rear camera. Panasonic promises an update to Android 4.0 ICS soon.
Where to get it:
The Panasonic Eluga dL1 is currently available via Expansys in the UK (as well as Amazon.de in Germany), but if you’re looking for a little more power, Panasonic will also be releasing the Eluga Power soon. Currently available for pre-orders, the Eluga Power upgrades to a 5-inch 1280 x 720 HD screen, 1.5GHz processor, NFC tech, and Android 4.0 out of the box.
