The “iPad mini” rumor mill just started churning again after new details popped up in China. Chinese net portal NetEase reported that Apple is planning to release a smaller iPad tablet around the third quarter of this year to fight off the Windows 8 tablets that’s expected out later this year. The report also mentioned that the compact iPad will cost between $249 to $299, and that there’s going to be an initial stock of 6 million units ready for launch day.
This should still be considered as nothing more than a rumor though, so take it with a dash of salt. While a smaller, cheaper iPad is certainly likely to dominate the smaller, cheaper tablet market (we have no reason to think otherwise), word of a smaller, cheaper iPad has been going around ever since Apple released the original iPad two years ago.
The NetEase report also mentioned that Foxconn and Pegatron will be tasked to make the device.
