Hasbro is looking to reinvent the old school game of Lazer Tag with a new feature for today’s smartphone-toting crowd. The classic NERF Lazer Tag blaster now comes with a slot on top for pairing an iPhone or iPod touch with the gun, which enhances the experience with a number of new features. Using the free Lazer Tag app, the phone can provide players with an augmented reality display for either playing alone (against virtual opponents) or for running-and-gunning with other people.
When used during multiplayer battles, the app provides a heads-up display that can show your gear’s power level, the weapon trajectory (for checking out exactly where you hit whatever it was you were shooting at), and a global Lazer Tag leaderboard that gives you in-game updates. Points gained will also unlock rewards as you move up the ranks.
The 2012 Lazer Tag gun will be out on August 1 for $40 or as a pair for $70. Each blaster is powered by 6 AA batteries.
