Canon has introduced the first update to their D Series cams three years after unveiling the PowerShot D10. While still keeping its predecessor’s levels of protection, the new PowerShot D20 has been improved all around with a better sensor, a larger 3-inch LCD screen, and a better optical zoom range – all packed in a body that’s considerably slimmer.
Like the D10, the PowerShot D20 features a sealed body that’s dustproof and waterproof down to 33 feet deep, and temperature resistant from 14-104F, but gets a slightly improved shock protection (it’s listed to survive 5-foot drops now). Under the shell, the D20 is improved with a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor that offers better low-light shooting, a 5x optical zoom and 28mm wide-angle lens, support for 1080p video recording, and GPS for geotagging.
For ease of use in the wild (or underwater), the D20 also features a new dedicated video recording button, as well as a redesigned button layout to make it easy to use with gloves on. The cam also features an Intelligent IS feature that chooses from 6 different image stabilization modes, and special presets for underwater shooting.
Like what Canon did with the D10, it’s going to take a while before the D20 hits the store shelves. It’s set to ship in May for $350.
