It looks like Apple will be getting an earlier-than-expected jump on their tablet competition this year if a recent report proves true. According to Japanese site Macotakara, sources in the US and from Asian suppliers said that the iPad 3 (and possibly iOS 5.1) will be announced at an event in early February and launched a month later in March.
The report doesn’t sound farfetched considering how things went down last year. While the iPad 2 started shipping on March 11 last year, it was only officially announced on March 2nd. The rumored early February announcement might be a bit early compared to the 2011 dates, but Apple might simply be changing tactics this year to drum up more publicity before the release (as if they needed even more crowds on launch day).
Regardless of the announcement date, all reports point to a March release for the iPad 3. The upcoming tablet has been rumored to feature a radically improved spec that includes a 2048 x 1536 display, a quad-core processor, and possibly LTE support and better integrated cameras.
