Untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 is now available for non A5 devices Redsn0w logo

Everyone rocking an iPhone 4, iPad (1), or iPod touch running on a stock version of iOS 5.0.1 – as well as everyone else still slumming it on iOS 4.3 because they can’t bear an un-JB’d mobile – rejoice! Thanks to the efforts of pod2g, the dev who found the necessary crack in the iOS armor, and the Chronic Dev Team, we’ve got this: a fully functional untethered jailbreak for A4 devices running iOS 5.0.1.

If you’re running Apple’s stock version of iOS 5.0.1, you need to download and the latest version of Redsn0w to make it happen, while people already running a tethered jailbreak can just download the untethered update via Cydia (just search for ‘Corona’ and install the package). If you’re still stuck on iOS 4.3.3, update your iTunes and iOS version to the latest version, and get cracking using the step provided above.

Check out the how-to at Redmond Pie for the full step-by-step, or just download Redsn0w (available for Windows and Mac) if you’ve done it before.

The jailbreak method is currently limited to A4 devices though, so if you just unwrapped an iPad 2 or iPhone 4S, they’ve got nothing for you at this time. pod2g is reportedly working on cracking A5 devices though, so if you’re currently running iOS 5.01, it’s probably best to hold onto that version and skip on updating to iOS 5.0.2 or 5.1 in case Apple blocks the exploit.
