While everyone could certainly use a smartphone, sometimes, you just want a phone that won’t kick the bucket when you’re roughing it. If you’re looking for something like that, then Verizon’s serving one up today: the Casio G’zOne Ravine 2, a rugged clamshell phone that’s built to survive the elements.
Specifically, the G’zOne Ravine 2 is designed to meet military-spec 810G standards for resistance to water, shock, dust, immersion, vibration, salt, fog, humidity, altitude, extreme temperatures, and solar radiation (it should work on the moon if you can find a signal). It’s not a smartphone, so software features are going to be limited on this phone (no Angry Birds for you, playa), but it does come with essential perks for the outdoors. The phone comes with Survivor Man-friendly features Astro Calendar, Earth Compass, Thermometer, Sunrise Sunset, Tides, Walking Counter, Star Gazer.
Verizon also adds push-to-talk, as well as the VZ Navigator app for turn-by-turn navigation. The rast of the spec includes a 3.2-megapixel cam with flash, a microSD slot for adding up to 32GB of storage, Bluetooth connectivity, and GSM network support.
The phone is available now from Verizon’s site for $150 with a contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate, and is set to fill their store shelves on the 23rd.
