A5 processor on the iPhone 4S dialed down to 800MHz, still beats the competition apple iphone 4s 2

Speed is one of the iPhone 4S’ more notable features, thanks to the dual core A5 processor under the hood. The A5 chip, if you remember, is the same 1GHz engine running the show on the iPad 2. But here’s what Anandtech’s preliminary benchmark tests have found out: while the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2 share the same processor, they’re not exactly the same. Apple apparently dialed down the clocks on the new iPhone’s processor, limiting the performance of the stock 1GHz chip down to 800MHz. The result? It’s still the fastest phone on the planet right now, beating every high-end Android smartphone across virtually every benchmark test while saving on battery life.

Here are a couple of benchmark results for browser and graphics performance. Not bad for a phone running on an 800MHz dual-core chip and only 512MB of RAM, especially considering that the premium Android kits (like the Samsung Galaxy S II) rock 1.2GHz processors and 1GB of memory.

Take note, however, that the Android phones tested here run on Android 3.0 (Gingerbread), which uses only one of the two processor cores for web browsing. Things could change once premium Android phones get updated to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), which uses both cores.
