Apple has finally announced a new iPhone. Well, that much was expected, since the event was called “Let’s Talk iPhone” after all. But the new iPhone they announced wasn’t the “all-new, mind-blowing” iPhone 5 that a lot of rumor-meisters expected, instead unveiling a much more conservative (and more realistic) iPhone 4S. Like the 3GS to the 3G, the iPhone 4S is basically identical to the existing iPhone 4 on the outside, but with updated specs and features that made us want to sell off our iPhone 4 to the first person who makes an offer.
Confirming a number of leaks and rumors, the iPhone 4S is now faster, thanks to the faster dual-core A5 processor that can also be found on the iPad 2. The camera has also been overhauled, replacing the 5MP camera on the iPhone 4 with an 8MP snapper that’s also capable of recording 1080p HD videos at 30fps. The cam also comes with further improvements, featuring a larger f/2.4 aperture and a new hybrid IR filter that gives it brighter, sharper images.
The faster processor, improved camera and the hundreds of new improvements from iOS 5 make up its most obvious changes, but here’s a new feature that really made us want to chuck our old iPhone as soon as the iPhone 4S becomes available: the phone also introduces a new feature called “Siri.” Apple simply calls the feature an “intelligent assistant,” but this feature is this phone’s deal-breaker. In a nutshell, it’s a voice-enabled app that understands verbal commands.
But it’s not just a simple voice-command feature – or at least not the old feature that had you saying “call Mom” in a flat, robotic voice. Siri was designed to understand context, allowing you to ask actual human questions using your natural human-talking tone. Instead of simply saying “show weather,” you can ask “will I need an umbrella this weekend?” and it’ll understand you’re asking for the weather forecast. So what will it do? It won’t just pull up the weather forecast, it’ll also tell you that yes, it looks like there’s going to be rain. Of course, the weather info should be enough, but a voice that can actually understand and answer your question? Awesome.
We also got a big kick from the demo. When asked to show a “Great Greek restaurant in Palo Alto,” Siri didn’t just come out with a simple result. It came back with “I found 14 Greek restaurants… 5 of them are in Palo Alto. I’ve sorted them by rating.” Ditto for setting an alarm. When asked to “Wake me up at six a.m,” it replies with a nice “Ok, I set it for 6 am.”
Other improvements include a new antenna system that switches between two antennas to transmit and receive, faster 14.4Mbps data downloads, and support for both GSM and CDMA networks.
You’ll also be happy to know that they’re sticking with the standard pricing for this one. The 16GB model will start at $199, while the 32GB model costs $299. Apple also revealed a new 64GB option that tops out at $399 with a two-year contract. The iPhone 4 then slips down to a $99 starting price with a new 8GB version, while the 3GS goes for free with a contract.
Pre-orders for the iPhone 4S start on Friday, October 7th, but we don’t have to wait long for the release. Available in black or white, the iPhone 4S will start shipping with to the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK on October 14. It’s also set to land in 22 more countries by the end of October.

Siri is also smart about using the personal information you allow it to access, for example, if you tell Siri “Remind me to call Mom when I get home” it can find “Mom” in your address book, or ask Siri “What’s the traffic like around here?” and it can figure out where “here” is based on your current location. You can also get answers, find facts and even perform complex calculations just by asking.

With iPhone 4S, the Camera app launches much faster and the shot to shot capability is twice as fast, so you’ll never miss another shot.
New features in the Camera and Photos apps give you instant access to the camera right from the lock screen, and you can also use the volume-up button to quickly snap a photo. Optional grid lines help line up your shot and a simple tap locks focus and exposure on one subject; and the new Photos app lets you crop, rotate, enhance and remove red-eye, and organize your photos into albums right on your device to share them on the go. New iOS 5 features include built-in Twitter integration and iMessage, so you can instantly share your photos via Twitter directly from the Photos app and send photos via iMessage to individuals or groups. And with iCloud’s innovative new Photo Stream service, a photo you take on your iPhone is sent to iCloud and automatically pushed to your iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC. You can even view your Photo Stream album on your Apple TV®.
iPhone 4S can also now record video in full 1080p HD resolution and with the new video image stabilization feature, you can take richer, smoother videos. Other iPhone 4S video camera improvements include increased sensitivity, sharpness and an increased ability to capture video in low light conditions. With the new iMessage service in iOS 5, you can now instantly share videos with family and friends.
iPhone 4S has the same beautifully thin glass and stainless steel design that millions of customers around the world love, while being completely redesigned on the inside.
