Sony Tablet S to start shipping on September 16 Sony S1 2The Tablet S, Sony’s 9.4-inch Android tablet, is now up for pre-orders at their online store, and is set to ship on September 16 in the US and on the 23rd in Canada. The Tablet S, if you don’t already know, is one of Sony’s two upcoming entries into the modern tablet space. This is the company’s mainstream model, to be followed by the compact Tablet P that spots dual 5.5-inch screens in a clamshell body.

With an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 5MP rear cam and VGA front cam, it packs an average spec relative to what’s already available right now but the design is what sets this tablet apart.

The Sony Tablet S sports an unconventional shape, featuring a curved bump at the back along one side for ergonomics. Designed to place the center of gravity closer to the user’s palm, the design is meant to make the tablet feel lighter when held with one hand.

The spec’s rounded out by the usual Wi-fi and Bluetooth connections, as well as an IR blaster that will let you use the tablet as a home entertainment remote. The tablet also comes with an SD card slot for storage expansion, and ships with Android 3.1.

The Tablet S will be available in two versions: a 16GB version that costs $500, and a 32GB variant that’s set to go for $100 more.

No word on the Tablet P yet, but that one’s expected out before the year ends.
