The September due date for the next iPhone is fast coming up, and here’s what’s been floating around lately: according to WSJ’s sources, the next iPhone—that would be either the 4S or “5”—will be pretty similar to the iPhone 4, “but thinner and lighter with an improved eight-megapixel camera.”
Other than the unofficial confirmation that the 2011 iPhone will indeed come with a Qualcomm dual-mode chip that’ll support both CDMA and GSM networks, the rest of the report didn’t spill out any other details. It did mention production challenges raised by the slim form factor, but the sources say that they’re still aiming for a launch by the end of September.
The WSJ report did add a few interesting details on what could be up next though. An update to the article added that Apple has been “working on a less-expensive phone with new features such as an edge-to-edge screen,” as well as a major revamp for next year’s model that could include “a new way of charging the phone.”
Now, they didn’t specifically mention anything about wireless charging, but unless the iPhone 6 going to be fitted with solar cells, we’re guessing they’re planning to go the HP TouchPad route and integrate the Qi wireless power standard that makes use of a charging mat on this one.
