Apple’s replacing the iconic Glass Cube store at Fifth Avenue Apple 5thave store construction

Apple has started a construction project at their iconic Fifth Avenue store in New York City. What are they up to? No one knows, but plywood walls have already gone up around the structure, with permits indicating that the constriction will include the removal of billboards, reinstalling water drains, and possible remodeling of the surrounding plaza.

The estimated cost puts it at more than $6.5 million, which makes it about as much as the initial construction of the cube back in 2005.

Are they planning to put up bigger glass panels? Will they be turning the cube into a cylinder using curved glass panels? (Clearly, Jobs loves the rounded glass pieces so much that they’ll be using tons of it on their planned “Mothership,” the new spaceship-looking Apple campus in Cupertino). Whatever they’re coming up with we’re sure it’s going to be awesome. The glass cube has been one of the most photographed tourist attractions in the city after all.

Meanwhile, if anyone wants to slap a big Windows logo (or Google mayhaps?) on the plywood structure, make sure to capture it on video. We’d love to see it on YouTube, if you don’t mind.
