Here’s a rather unique accessory for the iPhone 4: Kogeto has unveiled something called “Dot”, which is basically a snap-on accessory that fits a 360-degree optical device over the iPhone’s lens. What for, you ask? For capturing 360-degree panoramic videos, of course. You know, for those times when there’s just so much going on around you and you can’t decide where to point your snapper, here’s your solution: just hold up the phone and let it record everything that’s going around you.
If you keep landing in these situations, the Dot should prove to be pretty handy… as long as you don’t expect pristine HD-quality video, that is. Since the iPhone 4 itself isn’t exactly known for recording awesome videos, and this is really a consumer accessory, that’s probably a given. Thankfully, Kogeto has a few Dot-recorded demo videos posted on their website, so check it out if the quality’s something you can live with (or the whole 360-degree thing is something you’d want to spend a hundred bucks for). Don’t forget to use the mouse to scroll left and right to get the 360-effect though. Otherwise you just end up with a video that looks like it was recorded using a dirty fisheye lens.
No word on when the accessory will be available, but it’s up for preorder on Kogeto’s page for $100. The Dot accessory comes with WorldView capture software that can be used to instantly upload and share recorded videos to Facebook and Twitter.
