So here’s a situation: you rushed through the latest iPad or iPhone launch day and opted for the cheapest model with the least amount of storage because you didn’t want to spend so much up front. Problem is, you’ve been downloading so much apps and multimedia (seriously, how can you resist not watching high-resolution videos on the iPhone 4’s screen?) that you’re quickly running out of built-in storage. Actually, the problem really lies with Apple not designing SD card slots on their mobile devices. Can’t be helped though. If you buy Apple, you gotta live with Apple. But here’s a solution: Seagate just launched the GoFlex Satellite. It’s basically a 500GB wireless mobile drive that specifically works with iOS devices, allowing you to stream media to an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.

The beauty of it all is that this drive won’t tie you down to a laptop for serving up the files, working like Air Video, but without having to turn on a separate computer to act as a server. The 500GB drive packs its own Wi-fi connection so it can go without plugging into a router, and it also comes with its own rechargeable 5-hour battery pack so you’re not tied down to a wall socket. iOS devices can access stored files wirelessly via the free GoFlex Media app from iTunes. It can also share the love, letting it work with up to three devices simultaneously.

Pre-orders have already started, and should start shipping in July bundled with a USB 3.0 cable and charging adapters. Listed to cost $200, it ain’t cheap, and we still wish Apple would just start adding SD card slots into their devices. But since that doesn’t look like something that’s going to happen anytime soon, a 500GB wireless streaming drive for $200 is a decent–if not the only–option right now if you’re looking for true mobile storage for your iOS device.
