The iPhone 4’s an awesome mobile phone, no doubt. But here’s the rub: some people aren’t comfortable with typing on a virtual keyboard. Okay, scratch that: while we all love the compact form factor, we can’t imagine anyone choosing a virtual keyboard over a tactile physical keypad. That’s why every touchscreen-only device worth noting comes with an optional keyboard accessory. For the iPhone 4, here’s an option: the Nuu MiniKey for iPhone 4 has just launched in North America, a month after being released in Europe.
Besides offering protection, the MiniKey also adds a slide-out keyboard that connects to the phone via Bluetooth. It’s a fairly simple accessory, but the execution is pretty good. The keyboard also comes with its own backlighting to let you find your way around the buttons in the dark, and goes to sleep along with the iPhone to save on power. The back of the case also comes with a hole for the rear camera.
Naturally, the case adds a bit of bulk to the iPhone’s slim profile, but if you don’t mind the extra millimeter or two, you’re rewarded with a whole lot of extra screen space when you don’t have to pull out the virtual keyboard.
The MiniKey will be out soon in the US from Verizon resellers and Amazon for around $80.
