There are iPhone cases that look good, and iPhone cases that give it more than the usual amount of protection, and then there are cases that are designed with an awesome concept. The Third Rail System falls under the latter sort, with an all-in-one accessory pack that slots into a seemingly normal-looking iPhone 4 case.
The Third Rail System is basically a kit that includes a case that fits an iPhone 4 and a removable 1,250mAh “Smart Battery” pack. What makes it different from your average (dumb?) battery pack? If you don’t need the extra juice, this one’s easily removable. The included case features a slot at the back for sliding in the Smart Battery, which can either act as an extra battery to extend iPhone use away from a power socket, or a universal charger for any other device – like another phone, an MP3 player, or Bluetooth headset – that can be charged via USB.
It’s not even expensive, considering the multi-device use that it offers. The kit that includes the iPhone 4 case and battery pack sells for $90. The Smart Battery alone costs $60, while the case goes for $40.
This kit’s a winner. Now, if Third Rail can make an affordable kit for the iPad 2, that would be awesome.
