We want an iPad 2, but not necessarily for the FaceTime cams, and not really for the performance improvements (honestly, we’re still fine with the speed on the first one, at least for the apps we use it for). GarageBand sealed the deal for us though. Killer app, that one, and a steal at less than $5. If you’re into making music using the iPad 2 version of GarageBand, you’re going to need this: Apogee just introduced the Jam, which is basically an adapter that’ll let you plug in a guitar or bass straight to your iPad (or iPhone or Mac) via a standard 1/4” socket on one end and a 30-pin dock connector on the other.
Specifically made for GarageBand, Logic and MainStage, the adapter is a pretty compact digital adapter, featuring PureDIGITAL audiotech to keep the sound clean. It’s a pretty simple plug and play device, with a gain dial at the side and a simple three-color LED light serves as the input level indicator (it’ll turn red if your input’s too loud). It’s a definite must-have if you’re a string-shredder who’s planning to pick up the iPad 2 and GarageBand. Sure, the app offers virtual guitar, but you just can’t beat the feel of the real thing, right? You can’t really “shred” or slap and pop a touchscreen. The Apogee Jam is due out by the end of Marc for $99.
