Apple’s new screw means they don’t want you screwing around with Apple’s new stuff Apples Pentalobe screws

Apparently, new shipments of iPhone 4 units feature something new on it. You might have missed it (and you probably will if you’re not the type to take it apart) since it’s a really tiny change: New screws! It’s not your typical screw either. It’s a new five-point ‘pentalobe’ screw type that you might have a problem dealing with using the typical screwdrivers in your typical toolbox. What does that mean? That means that Apple really doesn’t want you (or other third-party repair shops) screwing with their stuff.

It’s not like the average Joe would be inclined to open their iPhones to do their own repairs (seriously, just take it to a Genius Bar. It’s safer), but in case you wanted to, you can still do it using iFixit’s $9.95 iPhone 4 Liberation Kit. The kit comes with a Pentabular screwdriver, plus a #00 Philips screwdriver and two standard Philips #00 screws to replace the ones on your new iPhone 4.

Check out the iFixit blog if you want to learn what’s up with the new screws, and nod along if you believe that Apple’s trying to screw you over. [via Geeky Gadgets]
