Acer has just announced a new range of touch-based devices, including a huge 4.8-inch smartphone, plus a pair of Android-based tablets. (The new devices all don’t have names yet, so let’s just call them huge phone, 7-inch tablet, and 10-inch tablet for now.) It looks like the smartphone’s going to be the highlight for this set of Android devices, if only because, 1) It’s huge, and 2) the specs are pretty good.
The 4.8-inch smartphone will feature a wide 1024 x 480 resolution display, 1GHz processor, 8MP main cam with LED flash, 2MP front-side cam for video calls, Bluetooth, Wi-fi and HSPA+14.4 connectivity, and a six-axis and gyroscope for gaming and navigation. What version of Android it’s going to come with wasn’t mentioned (we’re expecting Gingerbread), but it’s going to come with support for Flash 10.1. Anyway, you get the picture: it’s looking like a capable Dell Streak rival. You can think of it as either a huge smartphone or a compact tablet that you can make calls with.
The two tablets (10.1 and 7-inch models) are mostly identical. Both are expected to run Android’s tablet-optimized Honeycomb OS, and will feature a dual-core Nvidia Tegra processor for powering an HDMI output and 1280×800 screens.
The rest of the specs are rounded out by Wi-fi and 3G connectivity, 5MP rear cam, front cam for video calls, multi-touch screens, and support for Flash 10.1 and DLNA media streaming. As far as differences go, the larger model will feature a Gyroscope for gaming, but aside from screen size, that’s it.
“Huge phone” and the two tablets are expected to launch in April, 2011.
Acer also mentioned another 10-inch Windows 7 tablet set for a February release. Few details were released, but it might run on a new AMD platform, and will feature a docking station that adds a keyboard to turn it into a laptop. Sounds like a good idea, although you might want to take care not to flip it closed (like you would a real laptop). That could get real nasty real quick.
