Heads-up, potential-Android-tablet-shopper, ViewSonic’s 7-inch ViewPad 7 just popped up on Amazon. Not really shocking news, since ViewSonic did mention coming out with it sometime in late-2010, but the $600 price isn’t what we all expected. In fact, it’s considerably more expensive than what was mentioned earlier this month, when they said it was going to cost $480.
It sounds like a fair price if you compare it to Samsung’s Galaxy tab though, and maybe that’s what they’re aiming for. Both tablets feature Android 2.2, a 7-inch screen and dual cams, but the ViewPad 7 packs a weaker 600MHz ARM CPU compared to the Galaxy Tab’s 1GHz Hummingbird processor. As a consolation, you can use this phone to make voice calls though (the voice call function on the Galaxy Tab has been disabled in the US), which might interest you. Just in case you’re in the market for a huge 7-inch Android tablet that can make voice calls.
It doesn’t sound like a fair trade-off though. We’d rather have a phone that fits in our pockets, and a tablet that packs a faster processor for the same price. ViewSonic is still expected to come out with the 10-inch ViewPad 10 early next year, but right now, the Galaxy Tab still looks like the Android-based tablet to beat.
