Google has posted a video of their employees putting up a statue of a gingerbread man on the office lawn (well, one of the lawns, at least). No mystery there, since everyone already knows that after Android 2.2 ‘Froyo,’ the next version’s going to be codenamed Gingerbread, but judging by the way similar statues of Éclair (2.1) and Froyo (2.2) are being pushed to the side, it looks like the putting-up-a-statue thing is some sort of office tradition, which shows that they might be done working on it. Or maybe they’re just getting ready for Halloween just a wee bit early this year. Video after the break.
It’s still unclear if Gingerbread is going to refer to Android 3.0 as expected, since a recent comment made by a Google team member mentioned that “Android 2.3 is going to be a major release.” If Gingerbread refers to Android 2.3 and not the 3.0 version that tablet makers have been waiting for to use, it’s still expected to bring video chat and visual effects. It won’t be the tablet-friendly version that tablet-makers have been waiting for though. According to this leak, the next version of Android could be called Honeycomb.
