Sony just unveiled a tiny new camera sensor that could pave the way for fitting 16-megapixel cameras onto mobile phones in the future. The company has unveiled a pair of new camera sensor models, highlighted by the IMX081PQ, Sony’s first Exmor R-based CMOS sensor that features 16.41 megapixels and back illumination that promises to cut back on noise.

The sensor is also listed to be capable of shooting 1080p videos at 30 frames per second and couples with a thin lens for a total kit that measures around 7.9mm thick.

Designed for slimmer, more compact phone models, the sensor also features Sony’s Exmor R design, features high sensitivity, and combines with a lens that can fit into a 5.67mm space.

Samples are due to ship out by January for the 16.41MP version and April for the 8.13MP sensor. It’s still unknown if other phone brands will be fitting these sensors into their phone cams, but Sony Ericsson could be putting out really high-end phone cams late next year.  [Electronista]
