Look out Sony and Nintendo (and maybe Apple… maybe), it looks like the handheld gaming race is going to get a little tighter. Panasonic is gearing up to join the fray with a new portable console called The Jungle that features a unique twist: massive multiplayer gaming. On a handheld device.
According to CrunchGear, Panasonic will be launching a new online service called Panasonic Cloud entertainment (PCENT) that focuses on online gaming and video playback. The Jungle device will be making use of the service, which looks like it’s going to launch along with Battlestar Galactica Onllne game and a regular video series from Machinima.com.
The device itself is still being kept under wraps, but the home page has a teaser video that shows—in little, quick, blurry bits—what it’s going to look like. Basically, it looks like a tiny notebook, with a display on the top half, and controls on the bottom. Various ports can be found lining the bottom part’s edge, and it looks like it’ll feature an SD card slot and HDMI output. According to the CG source, the device might be running on a Linux-based system (and not Android).
