Nintendo to drop DSi and DSi XL prices in September Nintendo DSi

If you were planning to get a Nintendo DSi or DSi XL, try waiting a couple of weeks. Nintendo just put out word that they’re going to be dropping the two handheld consoles’ prices by $20, setting the DSi’s price to $150, while the larger-screened DSi XL’s price drops down to $170.

From Nintendo’s press release:

Effective Sept. 12, the new suggested retail price of the Nintendo DSi system will be $149.99, while the new suggested retail price for the Nintendo DSi XL system will be $169.99. The Nintendo DS Lite model will remain at a suggested retail price of $129.99.

While the rest of the release says that they “know shoppers want to get the maximum value out of every dollar they spend,” some rumors are saying that they’re dropping the prices to keep gamers tapping on their Nintendos and not on an iPhone or iPod touch. Apple’s devices have been reportedly taking away a huge chunk of the mobile gaming market thanks to cheap, easy-to-get games. The timing’s just about right since Apple’s expected to unveil their next-gen iPod touch later this week too. If that’s the case, then gamers should be thankful. Maybe we could see cheaper games in the near future as other platforms try to stay competitive with cheap app store games. Now if we can only get Apple to lower fuel prices…
