Moto just put out the word that if you use the leaked Android 2.2 upgrade on your Droid X, you could get stuck with the unofficial release, and you’re on your own. Meaning, there won’t be an upgrade path, so you won’t be able to get the official 2.2 patches. Not necessarily something new, although HTC did go unconventional earlier this month when they put out a special Android 2.2 update patch for those who used a leaked Android 2.2 on their EVO 4Gs.
Here’s the official word from Motorola’s support forums:
WARNING: Do NOT load the leaked 2.2 upgrade that has been floating around on the Internets. There is currently no upgrade path from that load to the official 2.2 load that will be released by early September. Unless you have some plan to flash your phone back to the current official load, you could be stuck on the leaked version.
So there you go. If you used the leak to upgrade your Droid X to 2.2, then you can’t get the official 2.2 version. The good news is that, well, you’re already on 2.2 if you don’t mind rocking the unofficial version. And since the official version won’t be for around a week or two, there’s still time to either (somehow) kick it back to factory defaults and get ready for the officially official update or wait for the Android dev community to cook up a root-friendly patch that’ll easily bring you back to the “official” fold like HTC did.
