Well, that was too easy. Some users over at the XDA Developers forum just found out an unbelievably easy way to unlock the Samsung Galaxy S: just look at the file system. Apparently, the phone packs its own unlock codes in an internal backup (.bak) file and not stored in a remote server.
Having access to the phone’s unlock code with a USB cable and any hex editor basically lets you ‘unlock’ it for working on any network without having to root the phone or re-lock it for warranty purposes. Simply put, that means you can use your T-Mobile-locked Samsung Vibrant to surf using AT&T’s 3G network, or slip in a T-Mobile SIM into an AT&T-locked Captivate.
Probably not the hottest news for the average user who’s satisfied with the 2-year contract they got with the phone, but that’s pretty handy info if you want to use another network. Or any network you want, for that matter. Check out step-by-step posted at the XDA Developers forum so you can do it yourself for free within a few minutes. Good stuff, considering you usually have to pay for this kind of info.
