Interested in jailbreaking your Playstation 3? A new USB dongle called the “PS Jailbreak,” set to arrive before the month ends, promises to help you with that. The $150 accessory is basically a modchip that allows you to run games straight off the PS3’s hard drive without needing the game disc, but since you don’t have to hard-wire it into your system, it supposedly won’t break the warranty.
The price is a bit steep at $150, but a simple accessory that’ll let you run “borrowed” games without the disc, create game backups, and allow custom firmware and homebrew apps, will have PS3 gamers lining up for this. For the skeptic, OzModChips put out a couple of demo videos on YouTube to prove that it works.
That’s news that Sony won’t like though, since it will allow for software piracy (yeah, we don’t think the average gamer would be willing to pay $150 just to run howebrew apps). They’re expected to release an update that’ll block the dongle from working, but the PS Jailbreak’s apparently set up to block that from happening, with software that’ll disable Sony’s updates from being installed. It’s all cat-and-mouse at this point, but if you’re willing to fork out $150 for something like this, a function that prevents Sony from stopping it from working is a must.
The PS Jailbreak USB dongle is available for preorder now at OzModChips, due out by August 27. The site lists an important point to note though: If you accidentally update your PS3’s firmware past 3.41 (which is what the PS Jailbreak supports) and it stops working, then it’s your fault, and you don’t get your $150 back.
