Nikon just unveiled the D3100, a new entry-level DSLR that features the company’s EXPEED 2 processor that ups the resolution past 12 megapixels (this cam packs 14MPs) and offers 1080p HD video recording with continuous autofocus for $700.

It’s a significant update over the existing D3000, packing a better CMOS sensor over the older CCD that raises the light sensitivity to ISO 12,800. The D3100 also features an 11-point AF for sharp images, 3FPS burst shooting, a fairly large 3-inch LCD for easy previews and playback, 6 AE scene modes, and an auto scene selector to spare you from actually having to set it (although you can still do it manually, of course).

For beginners, the D3100 also features Nikon’s Guide Mode that walks you through the settings and controls to get your shot right, plus the ability to save the settings for later use. The cam also comes with an HDMI port for playing back images and videos to an HDTV.

The new cam drops in September for $700, bundled with Nikon’s 3x 18-55mm Zoom-NIKKOR VR Image Stabilization Lens.
